well folks, it's that time of year where ezBoard send the heavies round looking for their protection money.

This year, we're being asked for $700 for a 12 month subscription. That's really rather a silly amount for a service that's not exactly cutting edge anymore.

In the past, we've accepted donations from y'all and even put on fundraising gigs, but I think that kinda money is just too much to ask for, given that there are many cheaper, newer and better alternatives, so this time we're trying a different approach.

We'll be getting a 3-month subscription to ezboard which comes to about $233 or so, then during that time, porting the forums over to a locally hosted system. It'll pretty much work the same way as ezBoard, but should work out cheaper and also get rid of the crap bits of ezBoard, such as their awful registration system which has caused users and admins alike a ton of grief just to be able to post a friggin' message on the boards.

For now though, nothing drastic will happen, it's business as usual while we work out the details of how the new system will work. If you'd like to contribute a few quid to the ezBoard bill in the meantime, that'd be very welcome. Thanks in advance!

not think it would be good to switch to php bb1/2 ?

Free to run and very customizable, plus, you can get converters which will save all members and posts.

our board had ez board 2 years back and had a lot of problems, php all the way!

That's one of the options Rog has been looking at among many.

I'm also sticking my phpBB boot in the ass of decision.

Theres plenty of conversion tools for it too, which is a plus.

aye. in the long term (ie next year sometime) I'd like to move FF over to something loosely based on Wordpress, where I can integrate the whole thing under one system.

In the meantime though, phpBB is a strong contender as an intermediate step to replace ezBoard and reduce the overheads a good bit. Edited by: fastfude at: 8/5/05 3:16 pm

Does this mean that you are not going to have any fundraising gigs at all this time?

Fundraising gigs are a possiblity, but again patience is the watchword. There are alot of issues to be thought about and none will be jumped into, given the scale of the board situation. As soon as anything's decided, you'll know.
