Whatever happened to Poultice? What about Fine American Blend? Ninebar International? Peppermoth? I've been thinking about older unsigned bands and what happened to them. Normally when I want to find out something about a band I'm straight over to wikipedia, but obviously wikipedia wouldn't allow info on the minutiae of unsigned Belfast bands so I was thinking that it would be great to start up a wiki solely dedicated to NI (or even Irish) unsigned bands.

I remember years ago a guy from RiffMaster General had a similar thing, like a rock family tree of NI bands but it's now defunct.

Would this be a good idea? I'd certainly use it.

It's a great idea.

We could all spend hours editing each other's profiles and make unsubstantiated claims.

I'd certainly be up for taking part in that!
3. avatar goatboy
Yeah, I think it would be a great idea. The old one that Steve Moore put together was great, but it would be much better if you could add in extra information in there likes bios, where are they now, music etc.

im all for this

If there was enough interest I'd have a go at setting one up. Problem is, I've looked into it and there are so many options on starting a wiki, has anyone any experience with this? what software to use? hosting? are there any good free options?
7. avatar tenrabbits
If you fancy it, the TPO have one which is great craic to edit.
8. avatar The enfant terrible
I used to write a load of bollocks on it and the Jane Bradfords ones. My best wikipedia moment was the stuff I wrote on the Ian Paisley Jnr controversy section which is still there.
9. avatar thebatgranny
This of course is the problem: You're all a bunch of wabs :) and it would be hard to keep entries of current bands from being populated with shite like "The TPO have the distinction of being the only NI band composed entirely of cheese.."

I'd still like some wiki building suggestions if anyone has 'em though.
10. avatar tenrabbits
Ah hahahahaha! I wonder how long Anto's uncle Eustace has been part of the TPO biog..
11. avatar rentaghost
common grounds has a wiki, as does city church

we use wikispaces.com for the church one and some arrangement with QUB and google for the cafe

I prefer the wikispaces one.
12. avatar thebatgranny
Yeah I've been looking into wikispaces. I think it might be the handiest because there is a neat little export function should you want to move elsewhere. it's also pretty configurable. Watch this space..
13. avatar rentaghost
It should be easy enough to link it to Fastfude
14. avatar thebatgranny
And it's up!

Edit to your hearts content!

Quick query, why limit this to 'unsigned' NI bands? And when a band gets 'signed' (whatever that means in this day and age) do they get dropped off the list?

If you included all the established NI bands it's not going to make that much difference to the size of the list.
16. avatar Gripper Magee
Eh, TVR.

TVR were Shaun, Barry and Ryan and later Rocky.

No idea, but if you've got a verifiable source for the info, edit the page!

Like I've said before, you do understand that you're allowed to add information to the Colenso Parade wikipedia entry if it is relevant? Or you could create "Colenso Parade (2006 band)" and add a disambiguation note to the top of the Colenso Parade page like for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana_(band)

(This is all assuming that your band meets the notability requirements for being on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(music))
28. avatar Mickeycolensoparade
I'll get on that :-D

It's no wonder that the idea of a "wick"i hadn't really caught on in NornIrond.
Ewes should try doing a "clawwsi" instead.
31. avatar thebatgranny
Some interesting updates over the weekend on the older band front. Backwater and it's offshoots (all the way up to Oppenheiemer) Cecil's Flea Circus and it's many offshoots, The TPO family tree (Jasper, Baylon By Bus, Nixon etc) and those crazy cats the Feline Dream. If anyone can fill in the blanks go and edit:

32. avatar thebatgranny
Haha, this turned up in my research:

33. avatar goatboy
I can spot demos by three bands that I was in up there!
34. avatar tinpot anto
It's the best thing I've seen all year.

Where does such a thing live?
35. avatar goatboy
That's part of Rog's collection. He posted it up a couple of years ago.

He was even kind enough to give me back the only known copy of The Cardboard Cow (by Chickenpox).
36. avatar thebatgranny
This thing is coming on rightly, I've worked out how to embed the myspace player so we now have audio:

No idea how legal this is though
37. avatar fastfude
The tapes are long gone now, but still have this lot:

38. avatar The Ronster
Can I just say - I'm glad tapes are dead. I hated them when that's all there was, and I'm glad they've been killed off.

What a crap format.
39. avatar thebatgranny
This seems to have died a death. Bah.

fill the empty stubs with temporary blurbs from last.fm or myspace?

[quote:a80434bd4e="yodaISgreen"]fill the empty stubs with temporary blurbs from last.fm or myspace?[/quote:a80434bd4e]

Well yes but the whole point of the endevor was to get the music community involved in the creating and editing of pages so that it can document it's own history.

There's been a bit of a resurgence in edits so that's nice, perhaps I should have bumped the thread ages ago!
42. avatar Chi-Lite
Chris sort that out, is it just me or is it impossible to actually find the bands on it?

I mean, you go to the front page, right, expecting to see maybe a list of bands, but all there is is recent updates, and all these tags. So you hit the tag Belfast, and it gives you about 6 or 7 bands from Belfast. So you hit the tag Alternative, and it gives you another six or seven bands, some of whom are from Belfast but weren't covered by the Belfast tag, and so on and so on.

Why with the tags and all that balls? Can we not just have a list of all the bands so that we can, like, joe browse?

Or am i looking at the subterfuge page for confusing stupid people? Cause it has me confused like.
43. avatar thebatgranny
[quote:a7686a88b8="Chi-Lite"]I'm having trouble finding any actual bands to look at! You could probably redo your front page and the tags are all messy but I've left a message about it on the wiki itself. Since it's interactive and all I hope you don't mind I've went in and sorted a few pages out that needed some attention.[/quote:a7686a88b8]

That's nice of you! it's great you're getting involved and not just sitting on your hole and shouting from the rooftops about how shit everything is like you normally do *sigh*.

Your comments have been noted, and I'll see if I can introduce some sort of 'browse bands' thing somewhere.

Jeez, Louise, sorry, I was only saying. I don't know how these things work, I don't think I'd even know how to leave a message. I just wanted to go on and have a wee look at the bands and I couldn't find any.

and anyway, i think everything is class, not shit. :-D
45. avatar thebatgranny
You could certainly help filling this one out:

46. avatar tinpot anto
Libel writs ahoy!!!

Go on marty fill it out!
47. avatar Chi-Lite
I've just joined, so I will. If I can remember any of it. See, had I known there was a Bus entry I'd have filled it in ages ago. but sure I couldn't find it.

I'm also going to edit the ballix out of everything else. democracy sure. :-D
48. avatar tinpot anto
Turns out that's the best band biog i've ever read.

cheers, I added in about Chris McComish also being in Jasper after Marty Maguire left, and then I bumped into him in the limelight and he was in that band V-Formation.
49. avatar Chi-Lite
Less is more.

Unless you're Mick Fleetwood, in which case, for fuck sake, put some more in will ye?
50. avatar thebatgranny
That's a bit more like it!
51. avatar thebatgranny
There's now a 'browse bands' link for your band browsing pleasure.

Good to see loads of people getting into the spirit of things and editing entries. Had some good stuff in the past couple of days!
52. avatar thebatgranny
This is still on the go. I've uploaded a load of videos including stuff from:

The Feline Dream
Clone Quartet
Tin Pot Operation
The Vals
The Cheese Junkies
Torgas Valley Reds
The Evangelists
Go Commando
Panda Kopanda
Alloy Mental
Cashier No. 9
Jetplane Landing
Fighting With Wire
The Winding Stair

If anyone can help with sourcing photos or videos, especially of older bands, that would be a great help!

53. avatar Ronan Yakuza
I just was looking at the entry for Yakuza
It's all true except the bit saying we were signed to Smalltown America. We were on a PSB comp, not signed to the label
Where did that info come from?
54. avatar thebatgranny
It's been removed! If you could add any detail that'd be class.
55. avatar thebatgranny
Following on from the excellent documentary about networks that was on last night I've started connecting people to all the bands that they were in so we can actually prove once and for all if there is a NI Music elite. The result? LaFaro's Herb Magee and his various bandmates over the years run the entire belfast music scene. Either that or most people have been in a couple of bands, some people have been in loads of bands and even fewer people (say, six or seven) have been in loads of bands over the course of many years, some of which have seen some degree of success.

I'd love to be able to do a NI music scene six degrees of seperation and see if I can get from Gary Lightbody to Chi-lite in six moves or less :)
