  1. avatar fastfude
Having just done both, I'm curious as to what others' habits are. State:

A slight grower (like most of his albums) but excellent (like most of his albums).

Downloaded: That OK Computer covers album link that was posted here the other day. Still haven't listened to it so no opinion yet.

  24. avatar gl2200
Last bought about two hours ago -

Grand Master Flash & Melle Mel - White Lines 12"
New Order - Blue Monday 12" (non-die cut sleeve)
Prince And The Revolution - Parade LP
Blondie - The Best Of Blondie LP (having recently discovered that the sleeve of the copy I had actually contained my long considered lost Coffin Break - Rupture vinyl, thus leaving me with an empty Blondie sleeve instead of an empty Coffin Break sleeve, but hey, at least the Blondie proved itself darn easy to replace)
Paul McCartney - Tug Of War LP (I expect this will suck)

...all on vinyl. Total cost £5. Thank you St. Vincent de Paul.

I think before that the last few purchases were Slomatics 7", Santana - Caravanserei LP, Johnny Cash - America LP, Pretenders - Learning To Crawl LP, an Artie Shaw comp LP, a sucky and schmaltzy LP of calypso tunes and some other similar eclectic nonsense. It disturbs me somewhat that I can't really remember these things any more.

Last downloaded - a compilation of 1940's hillbilly blues that I've had on tape for years, one of those surprisingly good covermounted tapes that came with the Blues Collection magazine.

Last given to me gratis - the Hand Of Death CD. Haven't had a chance to listen to it under ideal conditions yet, but sounded pretty satisfying when I was blasting it through the PA before Bad Boat went on the other day.

isn't that something useful NIMIC or Oh Yeah or somebody could do?
a big gigantic local music store online, where you can download individual songs for a decent price?
sort of like trust me i'm a thief's shop in ireland, only different, cos it wouldn't be a record label as such?

Bought - Futureheads: This is Not The World

I cannot tell you how fantastically good this is as an album. On the surface it's a step back from the big vocal gimickry that the Futureheads were known for in their days on a major label. This album is full of tight, exquisitely crafted, subtle, intense songs full of warmth, tension and soul. Some of the musicality is beautifully disguised like Wire or PIL would do. I love it to bits.

I bought a proper copy of the lovely CD (local designer too) in a proper CD shop, just to stick it up the labels hole (EMI?) that dropped the Futureheads in favour of the Kaiser Chiefs may they all die painfully.

    Downloaded/Stole: Vampire Weekend.

It's really good but a bit vacuuous after a few listens.

Check out "over and over" by ducky and the glo-lighters

"baby, you're messing up my mind" by the Voices

and "the best time to love is now" by Linda Rae.

They're the ones I've recently bought. If you like your Northern, they're the tunes everybody's after. Although the Linda Rea one cost me an absolute fortune..actually kept me hungry for a while. What a fucking tune though.[/quote:94f3c430c8]

Haha cheers! I've always been into Rude Boy/Mod/Skinhead music like Dirty Reggae, Ska, Rocksteady etc, and I've always known about Northern Soul but never properly listened to it. So a week or two ago I watched a documentary on the Wigan Casino on t'internet and after that checked out a few different tunes and I'm really getting into it! So yeah I'll definitely check out those tunes you suggested!

Trespass is a surprisingly good 2nd album for a bunch of public school twits who'd only just finished their A-levels and escaped from Jonathan King.
For me the stand-out track is STAGNATION, with its delicious melodic organ solo, and (best of all) the cathartic bit near the end with the gorgeous organ riff and Gabriel yelping "I! I! I! I! I!, (then up the octave!) *I*! *I*! *I*! *I*! *I*!" (he wants to sit dow-ow-ow-ow-own)
    Get that man a chair!!!

I use Spotify (and love hoking through Facebook mates' playlists for new-to-me stuff) then buy it if/when I come to really love it. As per above.. For free downloads, I get free sessions from Daytrotter (has a free iPhone app too if you didn't know/are interested), occasionally from LastFM, when I remember to check/go on the actual site, and things like Coors Open House Festival free cds. And people keep giving me cds, which is brilliant for a non-reviewer/dj.

I went to buy the special edition of Swans last CD, but it was $14 postage (on top of the $17 for the CD) so their loss and I'll just buy the significantly cheaper standard download version. In times of struggling CD sales, bands really need to stop ripping the arse with postage costs, there is no way a CD costs $14 to ship to the UK. I had one record label try to charge me $20 postage for one $10 CD. I was happy to pay the $17 for the CD, but they've lost $10 by me only paying for the download. Maybe if they sorted this out, M.Gira wouldn't have to whore himself out writing and recording "a simple, short, original song, acoustic guitar and voice, with customers' name in the song, praising the customer" for $500 a shot.

Mostly I just download off iTunes as once I put the cd on my iPod the cd never really comes out of the box. I'll buy the cd if the artist is someone new usually or a relatively unheard of artist in order to give them more money from the sale. Either way my feeling is if you like the artist's music, without the money from sales they may not be able to afford to do it again and make more.
