Biography
The Winding Stair – folk noir from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Established in the winter of 2005, The Winding Stair mix cello, violin, acoustic guitar and plaintive vocal to create a rich and uniquely immersing sound. Fusing evocative chamber music with knotted acoustic folk, it is as compelling as it is original.
The band have gigged solidly since their inception, leading to capacity shows around Ireland noted for the powerful atmosphere created through yearning vocal harmonies and darkly magical musicianship.
BBC Radio picked up early on, and recorded a three track live session that was broadcast on July 17th 2006. This recording In Session 2006 has been selling consistently at each of the band's many gigs, and has since been re-aired owing to its unique quality.
This in turn led to the BBC's commissioning the band to film a promo video for 'The Meadow', which was aired on BBC2 on March 8th 2007, and which you can watch on the website.
Their hot off the press debut album Finistere shows all the flourish, passion and keen sense of melancholy that one magazine called "Endlessly inventive... A Revelation".
