Biography
The Vals formed in 2004, initially as an acoustic trio of Doherty, Duffy and Boudin. Gigs in the Sarsfields, the Culturlann and a live session for NVTV's "Kick Out The Jams" followed before adding Marty Malone on drums.
In the spring of 2006 the band recorded a four track demo, made in the practice rooms of what used to be The Music Box and engineered by Declan Gaffney.
In the summer of 2006 they recorded a full studio album, For the Soulful (which never saw full release) and played support to Merseyside gloomers Echo and the Bunnymen at the finale of Feile an Phobail.
In September 2006 Pierre left the band. Doherty, Duffy and Malone carried on for a short time as a three piece before entering a period of hiatus that lasted throughout 2007. The individual members concentrated on other projects during this time.
In early 2008 the band returned with new members Ronnie Cartwright and John Rossi. A number of higher profile gigs followed, including the headline slot at the Swiss Partytime Festival, The Cavern and a support with Ocean Colour Scene. Internationaly, radio stations such as Boston's PW Radio and Manhattan's Altrok FM playlisted the band alongside more the more local ATL, for whom the band recorded a live session.
2008 saw the band sign a recording contract with Electrique Mud, a subsidiary of cult German-mod label Unique Records, which released the band's first single 'Yesterday Today' along with followup 'With You'. In summer of 2009 the band played a number of European festivals, and travelled to Germany to record their first long player, Sticks and Stones. The album was released on October 2, 2009.
