The original line-up was Mark Johnston (lead vocals, aka Punk J), 'The' Steve Jones (lead guitar), Gerry Ferran (rhythm guitar, aka Gerry Nearly), Aaron McCoy (bass guitar, aka Baron) and Andrew Johnston (drums, aka Andrew Griswold). Their first three singles featured lead vocalist Cormac Bennett (aka Cormak Bent), who performed wearing a schoolboy's uniform and glasses. Andrew Griswold took over lead vocals in May 2002.
Despite many line-up changes, the band is known for touring the UK, Ireland and Europe heavily from 2001.
In 2004, Bruce Dickinson of Metal legends Iron Maiden invited the Dangerfields to perform at his BBC 6 Music roadshow at Belfast's Mandela Hall on May 1 alongside Therapy? and Funeral for a Friend. Dickinson interviewed the band live on air on that date, and again on November 8, 2005.
The band has also received airplay on BBC Radio 1's BBC Introducing programme, many times on BBC Radio Ulster's Across The Lineand on BBC Two Northern Ireland's ATL TV on March 4, 2007.
Their debut album, Born To Rock, was released in December 2005 on the band's own label, Rock 'n' Roll Records. This album includes the song Maniac, which was covered by Earache Records act Gama Bomb on their Zombi Brew EP.
The Dangerfields have toured with Stiff Little Fingers, The Damned, Misfits, The Exploited, Flogging Molly, The Supersuckers, The Dwarves, Nashville Pussy, Zeke, Warrior Soul, Life of Agony and Rockbitch. They performed at Tennents ViTal on August 23, 2006, alongside Snow Patrol.
They performed their 666th show at Lavery's Bunker in Belfast on June 6, 2006, which was also Andrew Griswold's 33rd birthday.
In the October 2007 edition of AU magazine, the Dangerfields were placed at number 31 in its list of "Ireland's Top 40 Must See Acts".
According to the band's biography on their MySpace page, there have been 410 active members of the Dangerfields. Ex-members include Johny Five of Short Circuit and Ben Digo (aka Ben Dür) of Zombina and The Skeletones.
