Fifteen [i:27cba93f0a]years[/i:27cba93f0a]. This website is fifteen years old. I still struggle to imagine the web as a whole being that old, much less this little slice of it.

Seriously, I mean, how did that even happen? In the beginning, Fastfude was just thrown together with no grand plans or thoughts of the future. I distinctly remember being astounded that the site survived and thrived for five years, and then aghast as year ten rolled by. I'm not sure my emotional spectrum even has room for the number fifteen.

Much has changed in music in that time, and changes faster and further with each passing year. At the ten-year milestone iPod sales were still on the rise and the iPhone did not yet exist. Myspace was at the peak of its power while Facebook and Twitter were barely on the map. Music downloads were only starting to count towards chart positions in the UK (and people still gave a crap about chart positions). Easy digital distribution of music via the iTunes Store, Bandcamp, Soundcloud or DIY models like Radiohead and NIN's efforts were all still in the future.

Much has changed here too. The cycle of old users fading out and new users joining continues as it always has, but now social networks have soaked up much of the banter (and the bullshit), to the detriment (I think) of the broader music scene. With all these walled-garden networks like Facebook et al where you mostly just interact with your established friends, there's less sense of a broader music scene online. Such sites are better tools for interacting with close friends than the old public message boards, but it turns out, far worse for interacting with "strangers with a common interest". They're just optimised for a different kind of group.

So I'm thinking it's a good time for change - a bit of reinvention. Fastfude still gets a huge amount of traffic and activity for such a niche site, but the patterns have definitely changed: less banter, less rows, but more classifieds and private messaging. I'd like to fix the gaps and improve the quality to bring a bit of that banter back, but also capitalise on those changing patterns and do the things Facebook and Twitter won't, in ways which make the site better and more meaningfully contribute to the wider music scene.

My own real-life commitments have meant I couldn't put as much time into developing the site as I wanted to, but in recent months I've been working on an overhaul of the whole thing. The old mess of hacked phpbb code is being replaced with a new made-from-scratch app. I'm publishing that code on Github so it can be contributed to and improved upon by any who would like to, and reduce the dependence on me doing it all when I get the time. With luck (and help) it'll be live within a few weeks/months. If you're into PHP web development and would like to chip in, clone the repo and get in touch!

Even if you're not, your opinions as a user of the site, your needs as a musician, participant in the scene and general fan of music are still needed, so please put them forward!

Happy birthday Fastfude. Thanks for being there when I've been searching for new local bands.

Ahine! I would probably have died of anaphylactic shock in in 2001 (or whenever it was) if I hadn't "just decided to check Fastfude" before taking those antiobiotics the Doktor gave me without checking my notes to see I was allergic to them, thus giving the practice receptionist time to hammer frantically on my door to warn me. Or something.

Yes but whatever *did* happen to EZboard and their "exciting" new "Yuku" platform...?

The craic was never the same after the Great Ezboard crash of 2005. Hopping between forums was great. It was like being in the matrix. It's still the best local music site however and has helped me sell stuff, form bands, advertise gigs, slag people off and get slagged. Well done!

Still an excellent and valid site. Keep up the good work and happy birthday.

Sniff. For the 10th birthday we had a PARTY, not a code dump.

This thing is 15 years old? GEEEZ!

15 years ago, i didn't know what the internet was, how to use, even how to use the thing that i needed to use the internet. I didn't even know what a guitar looked like. My favourite song was "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands"...

Happy birthday FastFude, you old git. (still technically younger than me, but old in internet years).

Happy Birthday Fastfude....long may this invaluable site continue!!

yeah remember the Great EZBoard Crash of 2005? Some trolling maniac who had been totally BAWNED manage to hack all the boards and destroy them and they didn't have a backup or something?!?

Nice one, still a great site & an invaluable source of abuse any time one tends to saddle up thon old high horse. Thanks to all involved for your involvement.

This sounds positive - since Fastfude has been slowed down there has been something lacking in the local music scene (in my humble opinion). In a similar way that nothing has quite replaced what myspace did (or at least in theory did), nothing has replaced what fastfude did.

I used to check the site every time I came online. Now i take a quick juke every few days, if even, and am rarely in anyway bothered about any of it. A real shame because it could still be an extremely valuable resource

Feline, remember when we got banned for being naughty, naughty boys? That was my favourite bit.

15 years is some achievement, so happy birthday and all that. I have somehow been using it for 14 of those 15 years and met some great friends though FF who continue to still be great friends and for that I'm grateful.

I got bawned once because I took the piss out one of Geekster's ludicrous Walter Mittyesque yarns. (It was about how the Head of Sony Records was at this very minute careering in a taxi to Aunty Annies, waving his vast magic chequebook, intent on signing a variety of indie-pop-rock-blues-with-a-dash-of-funk bands IMMEDIATELY - *particularly* those whose new demo tape was 'almost ready' and about to be available in Dr Roberts any week now.)
As a result of my cruel satires, Roger genuinely believed that the Head of Sony Records had yelled "TURN THIS DAMN CAR AROUND!!!!" and headed back to Aldergrove International Airport in a huff, thus setting back the course of Norn Irond Muslei by at least 7 years. So for the good of the communitay, he had no other valid choice but to bawn me.:D

And, in retrospect, we can now see that SEVEN CONSECUTIVE YEARS was *exactly* the amount of time that certain license-fee-payer-funded local DJs playlisted Slow Patrol until they finally achieved international stardom.
    ...COINCIDENCE???

Hey, now that Fastfude is 15 does that mean it want to paint the place black and get all moody and start blazing rows about trivial stuff......

    oh

    wait.....

There hasn't been a row on here in ages :(. Roger was right when he said about Facebook taking over. Some artists just have Facebook pages and no longer have forums or even update their websites very much. Not so good if you don't have Facebook, like me.

    *putting on the tinfoil helmet*

Facebook stores information on you, then sells it on. All their revenue doesn't com from advertising. They make it deliberately difficult to actually delete you account (try to delete your account, you'll find out there is no easy way to find the delete button). I say it's a good thing that you don't have Facebook mate, and it's also very good, for that reason, why we have independent forums like Fastfude where we can chat, inform and update everyone on the recent and upcoming events. I wouldn't use this site like this if there was actually something that could replace it. But there isn't.

Yeah MiltonG565, cos there's ABSOLUTELY NO WAY anyone could data mine our posts on this highly encrypted message forum, now, is there? :)
  23. avatar MiltonG565
Of course they could. It would be incredibly easy. But at least the owner isn't taking the information himself and selling it on so that marketing companies can put better ads up. But i don't think this is really the best place to have this discussion. (they are watching us all the time :O )

    Or so you think...

There's google analytics stuff on each page, what do you think they do with the data?
