Do you actually need to convert it? Windys media player will play .mp4, alternatively VLC player will also play them which you can get at videolan.org

edit: Sorry you may need this guide for .mp4 on windys media player located here.

Windows Media Player will play MP4 - it's the most widely compatible format around. Are you sure your codecs are updated?

WMV and AVI aren't playable on the likes of PSPs, iPhones etc, but MP4 is.

Rockdanger is right though - VLC is a MUCH more capable media player than WMP - everyone would do better to install it for playing video on all Operating Systems - it has the most comprehensive codec support of any player.

    Get it here:

Squared5's MPEG Streamclip is IMHO the best I've ever seen. Have used it professionally for a couple of years now, love it. Have no love for the remote online converters, they're very error prone.

Hello all. I've recently bought a Sony DVD recorder to record films from TV. Picture and sound quality excellent and very easy to use. BUT!! It wont recognise anything I download from Vuze etc that I put on a memory stick. I can connect laptop to TV and play using VLC but it would be much handier just to plug memory stick straight into USB on DVD recorder. Any suggestions??

ps I also have a Sony TV with a USB port but again same problem!!

To make WMP support MP4 format, you should install filters for MP4 format and its associated codecs. After you install these filters, all players that use DirectShow technology, include WMP, will support MP4 format. There are a bunch of third party codec packs on the internet that support not only MP4 format, but also many other common formats. Just Google "codec pack", you will find K-Like and CCCP are the most famous of them.

What if you cannot install codec pack? For example, you will play MP4 on other people's computer and you are not authorized to install any program? On this situation, convert your MP4 to WMP natively supported WMV or AVI format is the best choice at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/mp4-windows-media-player.html
