Heya, I've a few questions and I was wondering if you could help me.
Are there any 'famous' music photographers in Ireland? (Now or through 'history') Who would be the most well known music photographers in Ireland?
What is the difference between a professional and amateur music photographer in your opinion?
Thanks!
strange question, it depends on how you look at famous though
Historically I'd say Robert Welch. The Ulster Museum holds a collection of his photos. They give a good insight into early 20th century Ireland. Worth a look.
Graham Smith is very well known in these here parts. Most of his work is music-related, but not so much of live music now.
Carrie Davenport too. A regular in Kerangg.
I'd say that the definition of "professional" is not that these two produce better images (although they do) but that they get published regularly in high-profile media and get paid for it.
Graham won European Music Photographer 2010 which has given him global recognition let alone in UK.

Gavin Millar?
Mark Hylands get my vote
Sean Hennessy?
Graham Smith definitely has my vote.
Well known/well regarded Irish photographers? Carrie Davenport from Kerrang/Hot Press and Mark Nixon who shoots a lot of Hot Press covers are the first two who would spring to mind.
As for the whole amateur and professional thing, I suppose it's the difference between someone who does it in their spare time (in addition to their full time job) and someone who works solely as a photographer to pay the bills. However, that's just my take on it...

Yep, have to agree. We are lucky enough to have worked with Mark Hylands and his work is mind-blowing. The fact that he has worked with some of the biggest names in music on a personal level and spends allot of time travelling all over backs up the level of his work. Its also quite a rare thing to see a photographer these days working with actual film.
