Hi I was wanting to know if anyone has the details of a luthier operating in the Belfast area who can be trusted?

I dunno how many times I've used guys and got guitars back in poorer condition than when they left. I need someone who can install a Wilkinson roller nut and do an entire refret. I also need an expert to examine two other guitars and tell me if a few issues I experience whilst playing can be A) fixed by them or B) Will have to be lived with (my guess is a tiny bit of fret dressing but I want an expert to tell me)

Does this guy Peter Griffin operate in Belfast? Or come anywhere near belfast to do repairs? He seems to be the only guy I've ever heard of that has the guitarfixing midas touch. Anyone else I've tried assumes too much about how I'd like the guitar to play and how it is setup.

I'd appreciate any phone numbers or e-mail addresses. Thanks very much

He operates out of Ballinderry, a 15min jaunt up the m1 to moira roundabout and 5min drive along the airport road and you're there. Out the back of Centra, along the Station Road. Certainly worth your while to take a run up to him if you have a car. I can PM the number if ye want it.
  3. avatar artyfufkin
Denis Curry is as good as they get. Short half-hour jaunt down the motorway to Portadown is not an inconvenience if you value your instruments. He also does repairs for the Emporium but be careful as the guys in the shop sometimes have a go themselves to save money and then tell you that Denis did the repair. PM me if you want his number.

I've got some similar problems too, and would really appreciate a number for someone in the Derry area who is well versed in sorting these kinda things out.
I've taken my guitar to the emporium and they've had no luck with it, so i think a luthier would be the way to go.

Any numbers would be appreciated! Cheers.

I doubt it. Any small jobs (re-strings, basic setups, wiring jobs) are done in-house, unless it's specifically requested that they go to Dennis. If we said it went to Dennis, then it went to him. There's nobody in the shop capable of re-frets, cutting nuts, etc. etc.
  8. avatar themetalmartyr
I learnt my lesson about taking a guitar to a shop before!! Now I'm older and wiser but I still can't refret a guitar or install a roller nut. But I'll find someone who can and doesn't assume that I pick strings lightly or want a low action. Its a tough old sport at times;)
  9. avatar jonnyrock
Vinny Mc Cusker is very good if your lookin someone in Mid Ulster/Derry. Operates out of Maghera, a shop called Danny Ottersons. Give Danny a call and he'll point you in the right direction, you'll find it in the yellow pages or net. Did one of mine, great job!

years ago , dennis currie fitted a graphite nut to a US strat i used to own. i never did see such an untidy piece of work. currie is a stupendously overrated "tech",couldnt even fit a new nut tidily. took it to ernie mcmillen to have it done right. ernie is as good as they come and you should make contacting him your priority ,guy is a proper luthier professionally, not a part time hack like currie. any of the guys at avalon workshop newtownards, ernie or robin will do a proper pro job on your guitar at very reasonable prices, their manager, jim black, is a terrific guy to deal with . id avoid a hasbeen like currie and a wood butcher called bill murray who i think works out of belmont road like the plague.

Scumbag, I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience with Dennis, but I worked in the guitar emporium for a couple of years until it closed and saw literally hundreds of his repairs come through. His work was consistently good, and in some cases the work was really astounding - neck repairs in particular. I was so impressed by his work that I got him to re-fret my telecaster, and I'm really fussy about that guitar.

    Hi
Old thread but oldie just joined. Just bought a electric 12 string (rickenbacker look-a-like) and need to get it set up decently. Way beyond my very limited expertise - seen a few people mentioned here - I live on the east side of Belfast so any suggestions/phone numbers/email addressese would be appreciated.
    Thanks
  30. avatar themetalmartyr
In the end I managed to two bus journey it to Ballinderry and got Peter to do it for me.

It all went good but the components I got did not live up to the job which killed me. I still can't play the guitar really, I can't play them if they aint just right.

    The refret was excellent.

Will probably get my flying v done by peter too. If I knew what type of fret wire fitted my flying v though I'd buy it myself and get Balazs to do it who is a luthier who works at Avalon also and with Ernie whats his face. I would do this outta handiness.
  31. avatar Jim Cava
Both Balasz and Ernie are excellent luthiers. I would highly recommend either for any guitar job.

Speaking as one of those repairman types, although we do want the business, we may not want our private numbers on forums.

I'm assuming that's Pete's home number, i don't know if he has a separate line.

At any rate, it might be a bit more tactful to PM those sorts of details. I know that's how i'd want it, anyway.

    My first post!
I've given up on trying to get Peter Griffin to fix my guitar. I emailed him with what I needed done (nut finished), 30min job he says, call the house to arrange a day to come.
So I rang, and he says he doesn't work like that, he's too busy. So the the best way to get him is to ring the day you want to come when you're ready to leave and he'll say if he can do it or not. I had 3 of these days, 3 days I was free, and ready to go out the door, never any good, 2 weeks go by. 4th attempt he basically sighed and says okay, I'll set aside what I'm doing and do your nut for you, get here asap. Really made me feel like I was just interrupting his life. Unfortunately when he gave me his address and I google mapped it, it turned out there are TWO Ballinderrys, and he lives in the one that's over 60 miles away, so by the time I'd get there it'd be too late in the day and I didn't want to annoy him any more than I already had, so I cancelled, he sounded relieved.

Any good repair guys more North? Excluding Vincent from Danny Otterton's
  56. avatar Pete-griffin
Dear Razmossis, Pete Griffin here. I'm sorry you have found it necessary to use this public forum to air your opinion so I trust you won't mind me doing likewise in response. Please understand, I am kept very busy, all day, every day. I do my work on a fair, first come, first served basis, however, under certain circumstances, I will try and fit people in where possible. I do work from home but from time to time I need to go out. This is the reason I advise people to always ring 1st especially if a long distance is involved, to avoid a wasted journey. You say you're about 60 miles away, how would you like to just turn up and find me not in?
You are right, there are two Ballinderrys' (not much I can do about that). This is why I quote the postcode and give as good directions as I can.
There may very well be a good luthier near to you, twiddling his thumbs just waiting for a call from you at whatever time of day suits you best. If you find someone like that, ask him to give me a call, I may be in a position to pass some work on.
I will not respond any further on this site so if you have anything more to add, please do so in person.

    Kind regards Pete..
  57. avatar BGM
I wouldn't use anyone but Peter Griffin. He's the only luthier I've ever used and I'll continue to use him. He has done excellent repairs and set ups on my basses. He knows exactly how I like my bass to be set up with regards to string action etc I'm bringing my new bass to him this week for a setup. I have no doubt it'll play like a dream after he's finished with it.
  58. avatar tokaitelejohn
Can't agree more with BGM. Pete's work is absolutely top class and besides that he is a total gent to deal with. Dennis Currie likewise by the way!
