I've noticed that there are releases by a few local types on Spotify and I thought a thread to share local playlists might be a good idea.

How do you list a record on Spotify?
  11. avatar The Ronster
You need to go through a digital distributor that has a deal with Spotify. I'm sure the good people here won't mind pointing you in the direction of such a service.

It'll cost a few quid though (maybe somewhere in the $30-40 range, I think, per album).
  12. avatar Chi-Lite
Just get a record company to do it. ;)
  13. avatar Sian
Olympic Lifts are on it too.
  14. avatar Strong Reaction
    I'll pass.
  15. avatar The Ronster
Just had a wee juke around - I think it can be done for something closer to $10 per album.
  16. avatar Eamonn Evangelists
Where from? I'm sick of waiting around for tunecore to get in on the act.
  17. avatar Big Homeless
we used recordunion on recomendation from the good man Anto, I don't remember having to pay, maybe I did.
  18. avatar comprachio
Sentric Music (I've raved about them before on here) put our music up on it for free amongst other things.
  19. avatar The Ronster
Oh, we're with Sentric. Must see how that works...
  20. avatar comprachio
They asked us if we wanted to be on it rather than having the service on their site - I think it was part of a trial - but send them an email and see what the craic is with it Ron

Are you nuts? Raved about them?
Allow me to rant about them -
they are one of these cowboy outfits who steal 20% of songwriters' PRS money,
whilst purporting to "collect" it for them.
Since any songwriter can join PRS themselves (for a tenner, these days) and get 100%
of all their PRS royalties, this is basically just a con-trick that preys on
    songwriters' ignorance.
  22. avatar xfirefishx
I decided to search for a few locals on Spotify and have a wee listen.
Cashier No 9... 'Do you mean Cahier no 9?' No, but okay. So now I'm listening to 42 West Avenue by Cahier no 9. 'Do you mean Cahir no 9?' No, but now I'm listening to some band called Broom Bezzums.
  23. avatar comprachio
    [quote:5975e83ad2]songwriters' ignorance.[/quote:5975e83ad2]

I assure you its not ignorance... I knew all about the percentages before I got involved with them. Its the other avenues that being with sentric opened up that I'm happier about. They are very good at getting syncs and have good relationships with labels and English festivals and we've benefited from that. They also backdate prs monies - something PRS don't (or didn't, I apologise if I'm wrong) do.

We don't have a manager at the moment (who would want 15-20% anyway) and they are doing many jobs that a manager would do for a band and I am happy working with them. Everyone's experience will be different I'm sure but I don't feel in any way ripped off.

Of course PRS and MCPS backdate some things - how else do you think a company like Sentric is able to get the money from them?
I appreciate that they are doing some things for you which a publisher and/or manager might do, and similarly charge you for, so that's a judgement call which is up to you.
It's just when I read a phrase on their website like "help collect PRS royalties for you" - that's about as ludicrous as if somebody did you a deal where "we take your bank ATM cash card for you, and for a 20% fee, we help collect £10 notes for you from cash machines", or "Call Centre Workers - worried about getting paid properly? Sign up with Bull Sheet Ltd! For a 20% commission, we will collect your salary for you from your employer! We will also take your monthly payslip and file it in a swanky presentation folder that we bought in WH Smiths for £1.50, saving you all the hassle!".

PRS pay direct into your nominated personal bank account by BACS transfer. You do not need a 3rd party shyster to "help collect" this money.
  25. avatar feline1
Anyways apropros of it being like about FIVE months since the digital aggregator apparently submitted it, HELL AND HIGH WATER by the Feline Dream is now available on Spotify. I am off to play it non-stop and see if I can afford a bigger yacht than Nicholas Carlisle.

I think you missed my point on backdating. PRS state:

[quote:1e263f59f7]Members can claim a maximum of three years' back-dated royalties, provided they have been a member during that period. [b:1e263f59f7]New members[/b:1e263f59f7] can claim from the effective commencement date of their membership.[/quote:1e263f59f7]

So if you're a new member of PRS you can only claim from the day you register. New members of Sentric can claim back up to a year of royalties before the 'effective commencement date of their membership.'

This leaves a massive question as to why PRS don't let ordinary members do this if the monies have been collected?

    lol
Come off it. Sentric are already signed to PRS as a publisher member. So they can get any payment to them backdated for 3 years. So, when you sign your pseudo-publishing deal with Sentric, they obviously collect 3 years' payments on your songs from PRS, and only pay you for 1 year, and pocket the other two!! And you thank them for it and praise their name in public!
(you should also understand that most money collected by PRS is not itemized against individual songs, it is in a huge big lump sum pot - their rule regarded 3 years backdating and 1 year backdating for new members is merely an administrative thing, and had nowt to do with the money actually being in an account somewhere waiting for anyone. Every year, all the surplus PRS money that's unclaimed by anyone is given to Amy Whinehouse and Robbie Williams, who spend it all on paintballing)
  28. avatar comprachio
Sentric actually backdate for up to 3 years. I mistakenly said a year.

Feline is it not acceptable that someone could have a positive experience with a company who you do not wish to work with??!??! I'm not an idiot. I know how they work and I know how PRS work. PRS cannot give me opportunities outside of simply paying royalties that I have gotten with sentric.

You don't like them. whoop-de-fuck. 20% of royalties isn't a grand amount of money to an unsigned or obscure band while exposure, syncs, contacts and gigs are very very important. The actual collection of royalty money (because of the relatively small amounts it comes to) at present to me is not anywhere near as important as getting all of these other things... hence at present I use sentric.

If we were a well off and high profile band then we would have a manager/publishing company/label and would have no need for companies like sentric.
  29. avatar feline1
Are nuts? Can you imagine how much I'd probably have found about to complain about them if I DID work with them!?

I already accepted that they their "added value" publishing/managerial services may well be good for you personally, in an earlier post. You can tell this by moving your eyes along the words I typed and joining them up into words.

What I also already clearly said I had an issue with, is a company who's basic advertising ploy ("we can collect your PRS royalties for you") is total misleading bullsh1t virtually to the point where Trading Standards might want to make a pleasing soufflée out of their testes. What's difficult?

Yes but another thing I thought I'd add to this thread:

PRS themselves already take a commission for collecting your royalties (they're putting it up, too... it's around 7% or 8% for most sources)

Add this to some company taking a further 20% cut of your money.

And then paying tax on it if it's in any way substantial ("consult HMRC for advice", ahem)... probably at another 20%

...you're left with only about 52p for every £1 of royalties that PRS collect from the BBC on your behalf...

...and considering that YOU pay for the BBC in the first place with your license fee, you might as well ANNEX THE SUDETENLAND! :-O
