For those who have dealt with or who are thinking of dealing with Andy/Fatboy, read on.
I bought a Takamine guitar and case from him last Saturday, and as he seems to only deal from his car or van, didn't have any time to check it out other than superficially at the roundabout where we met.
On arriving home I noticed the strings were black and the action was pretty high, so I made a few adjustments, left it overnight and changed the strings. No change next day.
The guitar was basically unplayable. Action at the 12th fret is about 7-8/32.....and intonation was out.
As action should be really no more than 3-4/32 there, it was way out of order and was little more than an eggslicer above the 5th fret.
I called him and he told me it was fine, and I must have been responsible as it was playing great.
As someone with 35 years playing guitar and having fixed more than I can remember, I told him that was bollocks, and he told me he'd to talk to his friend and hung up.
Since then he's ignored all calls and texts for the past 4 days.
I took the guitar for a professional opinion, and it is indeed buggered. It'd need a complete neck reset and additional work costing over 200.
It is likely that it had been stored in damp conditions with strings at full tension for some time, hence their oxidation. The case also shows signs of rust supporting this.
As he told me that he has a container full of equipment that he'll be selling, that sounds about right, and electronic gear will be dandy as a result.
So, if you're dealing with this guy make sure you can get a good look at what you're getting. Try it out fully, and if there is the slightest doubt don't proceed, as that will be the last time you see him.
In addition, I'd appreciate any more information about him, as I'll be starting legal proceedings against him ASAP.
I've some information, but not enough, so please PM me.
This has always been a good place to buy, and we can do without Delboys unloading bad gear literally off the back of lorries .
And who knows where container loads of it originated?
  2. avatar fletch_belfast
Legal proceedings...? How much did u actually pay for this guitar, and what was it?

Im not being un-sympathetic, but speaking of your years of experience and the like, what were u doing buying off the back of a lorry in the first place? And surely if the strings were so high off the board u would have noticed this even in the short time u apparently had to view the instrument before purchase..?
  3. avatar anty2
regardless of the viewing and the price paid, it wasnt mentioned the guitar was in that condition. should fatboy not have checked the equipment before selling it? if what EPK says is true why would the guy refuse to contact him when the equipment he bought from him has a legitimate problem.

    its time for judge judy
  4. avatar gared
I'm guessing this was an acoustic guitar? How do you plan to show that he swindled you when you start your legal proceedings? Just because you felt the action was high doesn't mean that he did.
  5. avatar EPK
You'll pardon me if I don't reveal my details to our resident keyboard legal experts, but I'd rather do this in the appropriate legal arena, which I will do.
And Gared, I gave exact measurements there, so if you don't understand the terms then it'd be better not to show that publicly.

    ....er...allegedly....!!

Jeez,i pop off for a few days and some nutter tries to bring me down!
    Dear Judge Judy....
If u look on the list of stuff ul see the takamine electric accoustic  listed for 350.after whining about the price i said he could have it for 300 including the nice hiscox case.(h8 phone hagglers..dont u?)im not desperate for the money but am interested in clearing out the studio.
everyone else who bought the other guitars etc came to the studio and played them and were more than happy(i hope) then paid, left and got on wif their lives!
This so called expert(who tours wif the answer,he says) had every opportunity to play/examine the guitar which, by the way was in tip top shape, only needing new strings.
the guitar was in perfect playing order until this loon calls me a few days later stating that he'd pretty much stripped it to its bare bones and found a fault!
as fletch says,if ur such an expert why did you not notice the so called warped neck?
This wee guitars been played by some sh1thot players and none ever complained about the neck.
the guitar was kept in my house which strangely has central heating and was kept on a good quality guitar stand in my living room, not in a container.the case was never previously used for this guitar and is pretty ancient hence a wee touch of rust here and there.wow!
Coming on here and talking nonsense and libeling me(or would that be slander?i dont know! ) makes u look the tit u are!
I have had no complaints about any gear ive sold apart from this guy who obviously decided he didnt want the guitar after all.everyones been happy with the bargains theyve got...im only clearing stuff out i dont need,im not ofloading dodgy knockoffs or running a del boy business.
i was good enuf 2 deliver this guitar (in my car,not back of lorry!)as eamonn couldnt be arsed coming to the studio like everyone else to try it out.the guitar was fine but you didnt have to buy it did u?....numpty!
i distinctly remember asking "are u happy with the guitar and are u sure you want it?"
He says "I want that one" and off he wheels, now its"I dont like it!"....Little Britain?Little brain more like!
EPK aka Eamonn seems to have a wee chip on his shoulder or is it just me?!
    Legally?bring it on stalker!oh and dont 4get ur receipt.....jeez.
    ...court adjourned.... :-)

(ps.would someone who tours with "The Answer" not use a better guitar than a second hand entry level Takamine?)
  7. avatar thebatgranny
Well, he does actually work with The Answer, or at least if he doesn't any more he has done until recently (see here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7921792.stm). As for the quality of the guitar, it's nothing a good ol' fashioned mud wrestle wouldn't sort out.
  8. avatar tinpot anto
Haven't seen this guitar, but given my own experience of Mr EPK's propensity to spread unfounded rumours I'd be inclined to take his rant with a pinch of salt.

You'd think someone with his long and bitter experience of message board etiquette would not recommend posting a hatchet job on a public forum as a preamble to possible legal action, well at least in this case everything can be aired in public and cleared up easily enough.
  9. avatar Daz
There's no legal standpoint anyway, as fatboy isn't operating as a business.

You buy something second hand from joe public and you didn't inspect it properly, it's your own fault and you're stuck with it I'm afraid.

Strange thing is i actually really liked that guitar and would have had it back no probs but as EPK/Eamonn/Answer groupie/Nutball bombarded me with numerous texts demanding this and demanding that i thought "Feck im"...you ever get like that? Some people are just plain hard to talk to.
Isnt there a law against stalking?Il ask my solicitor on Monday when i instruct him to fillet and skewer EPK

I am very well aware of what your exact measurements mean, Eammon and I am not sure what leads you to think that I don't understand them. All I said is that just because you think the action is / was high doesn't mean that fatboy did.

Example - I sold a guitar on eBay and the guy who bought it emailed me to say that he had to lower the action because I had it set up way too high!! I emailed him back and said that I thought it was low!

    My first post!
having used this guitar up in andys studio not that long ago i can say that it was fine and was used in loads of our recordings.was way better than our planks.strings were prob black from us stinky gits.anyone whos been to andys studio and met andy knows hes sound as a pound.reckon epk overtightened the trussrod?
sounds like a bit of a w!!ker.sold as seen i reckon.

    Guys,

I think everyone needs to take a step back here and calm down. Andy, I dont think your setting yourself out in the best light by slagging him off and trying to belittle his points or making base jokes at him.

EPK is a well respect bloke around here and just slagging him off isnt going to paint you in a better light to future customers.

Clearly there is a disagreement here about the state of the guitar at the time of sale.... the buyer must satisfy himself that the goods are worth the price.. seems like this hasnt happened in this case so it really is a case of buyer beware.

Can I suggest this as a compromise....
To Andy this guitar was in pretty good nick, not so to mr epk, so how about andy inspects this guitar, if its not damaged(ie smashed to bits on the street), BUY it back from EPK at say, 300 then flog it on ebay to some dumb english person instead...
the 50quid would make up for any 'damage', petrol money and teach Eamonn to check more thoroughly?

(Judging from some of his previous posts etc he seems to enjoy sh1tstirring.respected by who?As for future customers,i aint running a business here ,just having a clearout so im not really that bothered.people can judge for themselves i think)

(Fair enough though the guitar was as new condition and was well worth the 300quid he paid for it and the case, the strings just needed changed tis all)

Can I suggest this as a compromise....

(mmm, would have gladly taken the guitar back if it had been in the same condition but EPK told me he had fiddled with it so that immediately makes me wary. Also he is a rude and paronising.....er...person(trying to keep nice here) and should have been a bit more diplomatic when he rang me.I dont like being told what to do.Why should i buy it back exactly?Im not Marcus music. He was happy with the instrument when he bought it so thats that.In a private sale u dont give a 30 day money back guarantee.Im sure any music shop would have sent him on his way if he'd stripped one of their guitars then taken it back?)

    Case closed.

Forgive my ignorance chi lite but TTD=? :-)

So it's OK for EPK to give a link to this thread, detaling his experiences, in the other threads that fatboy has posted selling stuff? Just because he has longevity doesn't mean that his actions are excusable.
  25. avatar remaderyan
I'm not trying to be biased or one sided here at all.

I'm trying to be objective, i've got no vested interest in this either way, but i was trying to be a good guy in this.

Simply put, I know Epk is a sound guy and i dont know Andy.

Andy is coming across as a bit of a prick here.

Epk doesnt have a leg to stand on tbh.

    BUT

I'm judging you guys on this thread and there is only one reputation that is going to be damaged here.

Longevity doesnt shouldnt mean anything your absolutely right, gared.. But i've been on here long enough to know its who you know not what you know and that if your friends with someone else for longer then they're going to get the gig...(this old story...goes on forever) so longevity does count... Andy chose to rise to it so he needs to play to the 'rules' of 'the scene'.

I think he stands to lose more than the few quid of a difference, if he's making money (i dont know if he is or what he does, but its a music forum so i'll guess plays in a band or studio or sommat) then if people think he's a twat are they going to trust him with 100's of their money in the future OR are they going to give him gigs?

I'd love to see the Fight to the Death too actually.
