so I advised a younger mate of mine to enter the aforementioned competition as he met all the given requirements to enter and is a shit-hot player.
He made it through to the audition, then got through to the last 20 and went down to Dublin for filming on Saturday there (2nd May) for the 20 to be whittled down to the last 15.
He faced three judges, and played one of his own compositions, and some whitesnake solo. 2 of the three judges voted him off the show. why? According to two of the three judges, he was unfair competition to the rest of the players. He made it too easy to pick a winner. Now this sickens me because he's being denied the publicity he deserves, I'm not really fussed about the guitar but thats bound to be annoying for himself as well. But really, what sort of a competition is that where you're given the boot for being too good? he met every requirement they gave!

theres a link to his stuff, just to give an indication of what sort of a player he is.
    I'm bloody ragin.

    That`s what "he" told you.
They made NO judgement at all - everyone has the same chance.
As to being told he was unfair competition - sorry, I dont buy it.
I heard a few of the others and they were all great players.

The competition is to win a Rory Gallagher replica strat.
They can chose whatever criteria that they wish and whilst you might think your mate is brilliant, he perhaps isnt what they were looking for.
They held auditions in 7 big towns and cities over Ireland to get the final 15 from what must amount to hundreds of young players, many of whom I`m sure are class.

They appear to be looking for a certain "something"

Its their show, so their call.

I`m just back - my son was a lucky one of only two from Northern ireland to get through to the final 15.

They will all be broadcast in September, so, you can judge for yourself if they were fair or not.
Each player only had 45 seconds to give an essence of what they do - not a lot at all.

I`m sorry for your friend, but, you cant criticise a programme in total because of that - reserve judgement un til you see the final 15 later this year.

I must comment, the makers were lovely, and my son was thrilled just to get the chance to play the strat.

I had a listen to your friends songs on his bebo page and he's an exceptionally good player. He's obviously spent a lot of time composing these tunes and seems to be very Vai / Gilbert / Malmsteen influenced. Totally not my cup of tea at all, infact quite boring IMO - maybe this was really why he was given the boot?
