Shame, i was never big into them but i always thought it would be good to have a band from Belfast get recognised and put the city on the map, and get people paying more attention to here, and i figured they were good enough at what they did to get recognition.

Check their blogs on bebo and myspace if you doubt me
  2. avatar fopp
Don't worry big lad, I've had a look at the map and it's already there.
  3. avatar MULLAN Extraordinaire
That's cuz they put it there.
  4. avatar fopp
So, what you're telling me is that they are some group of cartographers?

How long have they been doing this for?
What other places have they put on the map?

Just think of all the other places that might have been, but never will.
  5. avatar The_Martyr
    Bad news, I guess.

Vinny was a cool guy, but I think he maybe left a long time ago.

    The Mascara Story: MK II?

Anyway, not really my kind of thing, but it was pretty clear that there was a whole lot of talent there and it was great to see some success there too.

    RIP.

Not really ever my preferred taste of music. But i thought that 'comebacks arent your thing' was an amazing song, with a great video. And i was expecting big things. Im sure all the members will tail off and do great things individually.

I just hope this wasnt anything to do with that Blast 'deal'.

    Best of Luck.
  10. avatar racecarisracecarbackwards
Why 'deal' and not just deal?
  11. avatar -TheKasbah-
Wasn't really a big fan, but I did hear about a girl who got 'Steer Clear' tatooed onto her leg, I mean, screw the guy who said about the sined poster boy being pissed. >.>

Funny coincidence, the first thing said after we were told about the tatoo was, 'If they split up, she is going to be so screwed.' Sooo, good luck to her.
  12. avatar The Ronster
Well, hardly - plenty of people have tattoos of bands on them that don't exist any more.

Anyway, sorry to hear they've split. It's always sad when any band with potential doesn't get to fulfil it, even if you aren't into their music.

This girl was a young teenager, like most of SC's fans, plus, most of them bands would probably be well known so people would understand, but in a few years people will wonder why she has that tatooed, and a lot of people probably already do. :P
  14. avatar The Ronster
    My first question is:

Who on earth is tattooing young teenagers, and why haven't they been run out of business yet?
  15. avatar -TheKasbah-
Idk who, but it's funny that she was stupid enough to get it.

Also, Blastbeat aren't too happy about SC's split =P But they are still working with some of the band members by giving them jobs at Blastbeat.

Let's hope she didn't get it tattooed near the top of her leg, near the old Lady Garden. Can't be too encouraging for prospective suitors to have "Steer Clear" written near the object of their quest.
  19. avatar The_Martyr
It amazes me that Mr Ferris distances himself from this band when they were clones of his previous efforts.

I knew a girl once who got a microphone tattooed on her leg after she joined a band as singer.

She was fired a week later.

I was friendly enough with a few of the guys from Steer Clear, but I'll be totally honest here. In my opinion they absolutely sucked. They represented everything that I hate about music, and I'm glad they've broke up. One of them in particular had no idea of work ethic when it comes to being in a band. I hope every other band that sounds like them follows suit and breaks up too.

I was'nt trying to be snotty when i said 'deal'. I just simply meant that, imo, blastspace records (having been offered and therefore seen their artist contract, as you're well aware) doom bands from the get go. I mentioned in belfast once to you at a party, that i hope that doesnt fuck steerclear over.

I just hope the split was nothing to do with the DEAL is all.

edit: changed 'was' to 'wasnt'. Typo
  25. avatar DuncanDisorderly
just off their myspace - sound like 10000 other bands and have that emo look that 10000 other bands have. no big loss. also, there only seems to be comments from 15 year old girls saying "i cant believe you broke up!1!!!1 omgz!!1". think ill offer to lend them some nirvana cds.
  26. avatar remedy malahide
It sounds just like anything that the label for Busted or McFly forced upon the average radio user. I guess they will be remembered for ever due to the high calibre of music they produced...

I mean if you're going to join a band wagon do it quickly lest the wagon get away leaving you with stupid hair, too tight jeans and no pay out.

*Mascara Story split after that Kerrang thing but reformed with more or less the same members under a different name.
*Steer Clear got signed and split from what I can see due to their own choice.

Unsure of the reasons but if I was in the music biz I'd think a little harder about signing people from this neck of the woods nowadays as this isn't too good an example of Northern Irish dedication.

My opinion will probably be overlooked, being a low poster, but a lot of bands here would kill for these wasted opportunities.

There was nothing wrong with their contract from what I know, and their split wasn't to do with their contract. I doubt it was the same as Daveit was offered.

the guy from Blastspace told me that Steer Clear were one of the hardest working bands he knew, and he was behind them 100% he said they had lots of dedication, and he could see them going far. Not my sort of music but they had a lot of fans and it is sad to see it going pear shaped for them.

Bands split up all the time when they are signed for various reasons, its just a fact of life. I doubt it'll make any label think harder about signing a band from here because of this. Dedication is one thing but when your in a band and you start going through the motions and it stops becoming fun thats the time to stop before the music suffers.

Someone mentioned that maybe the contract ended up dooming the band. Maybe its not the case here but it does happen. There are too many labels out there willing to offer a band a duff deal just to exploit the young band who will sign anything thats put in front of them. We have turned down two deals under legal advisement. One such deal (a US label) offered 23% royality and by the time all deductions were taken off we got 1%. That 1% could then be used to recover recording costs etc until such time as a profit was made. Its deals like this that could mean you end up owing money rather than make any. So these type of deals do exist, its just up to the bands and their lawyers to negotiate the right deal and if no negotiation space is being made then walk away. But to be honest how many bands will walk away, most wont even read the contract and sign it just to say they are signed.

Steer Clear were not my cup of tea at all but I do respect that they found their market and done well out of it. We played with then once in the airbrake but only caught bits of their set. Its never good to see any band break up but im sure the band had their own reasons.
  34. avatar himynameissween
my biggest beef with steer clear was the fact that they kept saying they were pop-punk, wheras they were cearly emo.

why do people always slabber at/disklike a band from their area just for having the combo of being "not their cup of tea" and being fairly popular? I was never big into Steer Clear but I can appreciate they had talent, especially considering the amount of success they were having before they split. Why be a dick to them just cos you don't like their music? Did they have a gangbang with your girlfriend? Doubt it..

In fairness like, are you deaf? Or just plain stupid?
    These guys where awsome.

Its so stupid the way you people group them. Oh there emo, there pop-punk.
Who cares what they are? They just express themselves through their music, why does that mean they have to be grouped. There brilliant and thats enough.
I dont understand why people come on and leave grief, If you dislike them that much why are you wasting your time coming on here and talking about it? Clearly you have no life. You can slag them all you want and say whatever you wish, but do you actually know the fellas individualy? Because they are the nicest most down to earth people iv ever met. They aren't big headed and always had time for any fans. Obviously baxter wasnt the only person that liked them if you read these comments you can see more than one person liked them. Stop being pathetic, Id like to see you form a band and do extreamly well, and if you had half the fans steer clear did youd be lucky.
Love you guys & good luck for the future. im just glad we got the chance to experience your music. :D

i think the band had a stigma of representing more of a niche in a market than the scene as a whole tbh, but that's just my opinion.

i'm not an avid fan, but i respect the blatant effort and steely determination that has been put into a clearly well-crafted act by the individuals themselves. it just *rides my goat* when anti-critiques are thrown out like used jamrags without backing up of opinion.

aside from cringeworthy songtitles and a few lyrics aside [it's all individual taste as far as i'm concerned], rest in peace a paragon of how a band should act/promote/progress/co-evolve/yadayada/blah
