I can't imagine what future English will be like:

    e.g. I go shop, I buy orange, I happy, I shit self....

I always get them mixed up. egg:

    Can I have a boiled e.g.?

That's a load of balls, the reason some people feel stupid is because they are stupid and rather than expect others to dumb down they should go away and get educated.
  4. avatar theavenue
This is asinine. I love using latin terms, french, german etc in my vocabulary, mixed in with English. If people don't understand, it's their fault for not knowing simple latin terms.

    Agreed.

If people are stupid we shouldn't dumb down things. If they want to understand they'll get an education, if they don't they can quite easily remain stupid...their loss.

People should be forced to finish school with a good standard of education or be made to stay there until they do...or beaten regularly...the gene pool is suffering.

I missed the part where school alters the genes. Should I go back?

Well it doesnt does it? But...how will idiots raise children to high standards? Obviously there are exceptions...but there is a lot to be said for nuture over nature...so...how your parents are will affect how you turn out. If your parents are dumbed down at school you may suffer the same fate and follow their example.

So okay...not exactly genes I guess...but it doesnt take a genius to understand what I meant. I have been in work for what feels like an awfully long time though so I may be mistaken...I think not though.
  12. avatar feline1
Yeah but some spides are SO stupid that I can't f*cking understand a word they say, and I feel this discriminates against me as a man of intelligence.
    So: CULL THE B@STARDS!

    Speaking of education, kickings &c.

Could we possibly arrange a short course for journalists in which someone, preferably me, gets to impress upon them the actual definition of the word "banned"?

It's kind of difficult to read an article pertaining to the destruction of the language written by someone who can't select an honest verb to describe what has actually happened.

Liam don't be sad and angry all the time.

Life is an endless dream of swings and roundabouts and candy, and joy and joyness. Look outside at a world jam packed full of interesting puzzles to be solved, people to meet, songs to be sung and life to be lived!

Think how lucky you are to have such a mind to experience them and understand so much about everything you see, hear, smell and feel. Go and buy a hot cup of coffee and big chocolate muffin and savour every bite and every aroma, then smoke a feg.

Look at this here Blake painting too, that'll cheer you up.

True in some ways, but people who have a decent grasp of the English language have been, (at times subconsciously), dumbing down their speech for a very long time for the primal purpose of pure communication. It hasn't affected how the speech of those people has developed over the years. I've noticed an example this myself as I used to run around with a lot of people, who certain people on this site (myself included) would refer to as spides, and I could never talk to them like I would talk to my "non-spide" mates. Bizarre, (to use a French word), but it hasn't affected me adversely. So why is it so bad that schools want to find a happy medium of communication with their pupils?
  18. avatar tinpot anto
That's dozy self conscious nonsense - (not the above post btw, the concept of "dumbing down" in general)

No one respects someone pretending to be stupider or more down-home than they actually are - you will alway look a fool.

Just talk normally and don't be a knob. The excessive, and inappropriate use of latin/french phrases is normally a sign of having a poor command of english anyway.

Being concise and understood is a skill everyone should practice.

Precisely, everyone has developed specific ways of communicating with people in their surroundings, and as such will [have to] continue to develop and evolve their vocabulary, right up to the day they show two fingers to the world and say, “Fuck you world! This old man [woman] will chase ye no longer”.

I fear the most annoying thing about that particular act is that people seemed to be preoccupied about trying to make things uber-easy for the general public and in fact they seem to be content that the general people in everyday life don't have a modicum of intelligence.

This would sugest to me that those who make such ground breaking decisions for other people do not give people much credit to begin with, never mind allowing people to work at life in their own time using their own initiative, instead want everything to be super quick and easy. If these same people spent as much time and money on making descisions that matter and let peole get on with it, Nanny molly-cuddlin muppets.
