An extraordinary assault on Led Zeppelin by former Cream frontman, Jack Bruce.

Although I agree in part with some of his sentiments, I think it's a bit much for someone of his stature to come out with this. A mixture of alcohol and drugs is to blame perhaps?

cant say i was ever a fan of the zep

I heard one of the Zep members on a trail for a BBC Radio show say "Yeah we were all crap, only the drummer was good and he's dead years now!"

I wholeheartedly endorse the opinion of Jack Bruce, one of the most underrated class basterds of all time.

"Anyone for Tennis" vs. "D'yer Maker"

    ?

    No contest.

I'm sure he really hurt them. Can't read the article :(
  5. avatar PhatBob
Yeah I'm sure they give a b@llix - but I was under the impression from the few albums of the Zep that I've listened to that they did an awful lot pointless meandering for a few absolute classics.

Mind you I have heard Ginger Baker's 16 minute drum solo too
  6. avatar Chi-Lite
I'd go Cream over Zep any day too.

It sounds like the boul Jack's just had a few swals.

Incidentally, I think that Ginger Baker is over-rated...Sunshine of your Love is the biggest waste ever, it should have been twice that speed. 16 minute solo means buck all.

But then, Bonham is the most over-rated musician in history, so i suppose it all works out. seriously like. Black dog? Drums play the same beat while the guitar and bass change timings. Kashmir? exactly the same. The best thing he done was the cracker wee kick-snare fills in Good times, Bad Times, and it still wasn't that great like.

    Over rated to fuck
  7. avatar PhatBob
I thought a 16 minute drum solo was over-indulgent twattery, even if they were all wasted on LSD Acids...

But woah there nelly - Sunshine of your love is a great track in this writer's humble opinion.

Lets agree the Zep are overrated and rejoice in our commonality.

SWLABR is easily a better song than anything Zep wrote. I'd probably include White Room, Tales of Brave Ulysees, Political Man etc.

What really puts me off Zep is the awful, awful attempts they made at 12 bar blues.

With Cream these are nearly the best bits. Page is one of the worst Blues guitarists ever to record, just after Robert Cray in my book.

And for lyrics it's definitely Bruce over Plant every time.

"Landau Moonbeams in your dark eyes"
"But the Picture has a Moustache!"
"I support the left, but I'm leaning, leaning to the right"
"She thought the leaden winter, would bring you down for ever"

    Class. I love the Cream.
  9. avatar PhatBob
I thought it was 'silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes'

    What's a Landau moonbeam mean? :?
  10. avatar Sadoldgit
The old boy has lost the plot.
  11. avatar tinpot anto
I read "Landau moonbeams" years ago. It means nothing that I know of. I'm disappointed to find that "ran down moonbeams" may be correct.
  12. avatar PhatBob
Ah - sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :o

I thought there was going to be some sort of hilarious rock fact story connecting them to Martin Landau that I didn't know about.
How they saw him bearing his ass in the moonlight grinning in a nevada desert while they were all tripping or something.

Go on Anto...tell me there's a hilarious rock story...please sir....?

I can only say bruce is an outspoken self indulgent twat. A bit like myself.

Led Zeppelin are and will always be the best band in this world. End of.

To me cream were ok, but ill say it. Nah they were "a load of crap"
  14. avatar tinpot anto
It's good to see though that a 40 year old rock rivalry is still going strong in oul Jack's eyes.

The fact that 40 years later he has an go at the Zep when winning an award for something he did 40 years ago is proof, if it were needed, that he is a proper legend.

I had a thought about that guy Landau from Captain Beefheart, but I had always kind of assumed it was some mad obscure reference from Homer or Goethe that I was missing. They were like that the Cream, read proper books.

The best literary reference that Zep had was Lord of the Rings and I don't believe any of them ever read it the whole way through. Though the bit in Ramble on where Plant screams "AND GOLLLUM AND THE EEE-VIIIL ONE CREPT UP AND SLIPPED AWAY WITH HURRRR HURRRRRRR" is the best thing they ever did.

I'll throw it in there, but I absolutely and utterly disagree about Led Zeppeling being the best band in history. If you ask me the best band in history is possibly Queen. And I accept I might get burnt on the stake for it, but fuck it, I love 'em.

On the issue itself, who gives a fuck. Led Zeppelin not only have become a bunch of self-indulgent twats with the years but they have become a piss-take of themselves besides, and this is even worse, becoming the tribute band of themselves.

In all fairness, that's an accusation one could just as easily lay at Cream's door, with equal evidence to support it.

Still, I like 'em both, despite them having tropes I could well do without. They were both at their best putting the heads down and chugging it out, and were equally guilty of meandering ould wank live and on record.

    Just like Queen...
  18. avatar unplugged
what positive youth typed on here re; Queen is ridiculous.

    a) led zeppelin MAY still reform with all original members - bar the fucking dead legendary drummer Mr John Bonham - of but wait - who is to replace him - his fucking son! As close to the original lineup as you will get my old son.

    b) Queen got that fella Rodgers in to tour and make albums with them ignoring the masses of other freddie recorded material left behind by him which they should be spending time mastering and working on rather than touring under the queen banner.

this leads me to point out that queen are now a tribute band of themselves thanks to that money grabbing imp mr B May who seems to have his name and guitar tone on everything now from cheap digitech fx pedals, korean copies of his guitar and Five! boyband albums.

Queen were yes an awesome band, i have every album they ever recorded and more, i cant disagree that freddie mercury was best frontman ever but as a band certain albums were totally shite.

To me Led Zep are superior, but thats only to ME.

But to come on and say LZ are a parody of themselves - now come on. their o2 show was enough to show how fucking good the band still are.

there are new rumours that they are to hold off 2 years for the reunion until robert plant can join them. so tribute band nothing my lad!

well i dont know a lot about cream or queen, but i am aware of a lot of plagarism on behalf of zeppelin. i think a lot of die hard fans miss the point on that, for those who havent heard this story before, you can look at these two you tubes and call it for yourself.

technically its sort of like oasis just being not much more then a tribute to the beatles with a modernised guitar tone.

the band never denied it- and alot of those were straight covers.
any artist in question was settled with out of court if offended which were few.

Few songs there yes you could say that about, but face it - they wrote a fucking heap of great original material.

[quote:fad7925642="unplugged"]the band never denied it- and alot of those were straight covers.[/quote:fad7925642]

It would be a legittimate argument if they did credit the songs to the actual author. But not crediting the original author crediting themselves as authors instead is outright plagiarism. No discussion about it.

As for Queen, what was the point in pointin out that Queen are just as much of a tribute band of themselves as Led Zeppelin? That is a pretty stupid argument for disagreeing with Queen being the best band.

And as for the fact re-formed Zep have the same members, well, who cares. They still are a tribute band of themselves because they basically have become caricatures of themselves.

The guitar at the start of 'Stairway..' is nuck from 'Taurus' a Spirit instrumental.
