It was sheer force of will, and no little talent, that bought Irish singer/songwriter [b:7504b4eeec]Gemma Hayes [/b:7504b4eeec]her first record deal with French electro imprint [b:7504b4eeec]Source Records[/b:7504b4eeec], as the singer had spent the best part of half a decade working and performing around the capital's premier music venues. While her debut EPs were relatively spare and folksy affairs, her label's legacy came to bear on subsequent recordings, where Hayes demonstrated a proclivity for chilled electronics and swampy, My Bloody Valentine-style shoegaze effects alongside the subdued melancholy of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. This cross-genre appeal would see Hayes mentioned regularly alongside female contemporaries Beth Orton and PJ Harvey and earn her a Mercury Music Prize nomination in 2002.
Six years, two albums, the highs of critical accolades and the lows of doubt and exhaustion have all led Gemma Hayes to this her third album [b:7504b4eeec]‘The Hollow Of Morning’ [/b:7504b4eeec]and with another roll of the dice, the ingenue of old days has grown and morphed into an experienced songwriter; and also a woman who has surveyed her career to date and decided to go her own way. Independent in every sense.
Co-produced by long time cohort and collaborator David Odlum, who worked with Gemma on her [b:7504b4eeec]Mercury nominated debut[/b:7504b4eeec], along with guest producers including Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), ‘The Hollow of Morning’ is a ten-track filigree of melody, subtle harmony and dappled rhythms. Recorded in Los Angeles, the album is the perfect hybrid of Odlum and Hayes Irish charm and the sunlit sparkle of California.
