I too did a bit of a 'AHKFUKRIJESUSWAAA' when I heard.
Replaced my long lost copy of 'A New Order' by Testament last week, by coincidence. Age has not wearied it.

awesome news, the last Judas Priest gig was half full.. heres hoping Megadeth will help fill it up a bit..
  6. avatar Andrew
Awesome! Surprised Priest are coming back after that last gig, but I guess Megadeth will double the numbers. It'll be cool to see Testament again as well. Can it really be 21 years since they supported Anthrax at Avoniel Leisure Centre?!

Can it really be 20 years since 'Fuckyadeth' took your and OD's Slayer / Nuclear Assault tickets off you at knifepoint?

    Aaaaa yesss.

I'll be there for Testament. Last 4 albums work for me. Brutal thrash.

This will be stunning. Provided the Odyssey open up more than one beer tap on the ground floor.

Whitesnake fiasco still fresh in my head.

i heard that paisley and adams will be coming out mid gig to present dave m with a plaque for his famous "peace speech" in the forum :-)

I might not be able to go to this any more. While I go off here and kick the shit out of a bin or something, does anyone know of anyone who might be able to avail of it?

    Those are some GREAT pics.

I enjoyed the gig big-time. Priest were much, much better than in 2005, mainly due to a revamped set list that focused more on hard rock anthems than turgid metal epics. No Living after Midnight though?!

Megadeth were so-so. The handful of classics were a nice blast from the past, but Mustaine has zero charisma and his hired goons are just that.

Testament, who were brilliant when I saw them in London a few years back, were utterly crippled by the worst sound I've ever heard in the Odyssey. It took me about a minute to realise their opening song was Over the Wall - one of my favourite Testament tracks.

The crowd was much better than I was expecting - about two-thirds full. It would be cool if Belfast got more big metal events. I like the three-band bill thing too. Heaven & Hell, Slayer and Anthrax would be amazing...

A friend met Dave before the show and asked for a photo, Dave said no as he was too cold! Someone wrote Metallica on his tourbus though

Agree with all of the above on the music.
Disagree with the attendance - that place was two thirds full with at least a third curtained off. Barely half full.
And despite that the Odyssey once again completely failed on every level to provide an adequate level of service for its customers. The queues for a drink were ridiculous, the staff were surly and unhelpful and there was nearly a riot when security went in mob-handed because some people were smoking in the gents. In every other comparable venue I'm aware of in the UK, it is possible to get a drink without queuing for 25 minutes and smokers are allowed out and back in again. The attitude of the stewards in the standing area to adults was consistently passive aggressive, or just aggressive. Everyone I was with agreed and had some sort of bad experience. I'm finished with that place (and I'm not alone), in future if such a line up comes back I will travel out of NI. Given the attendance last night, maybe the promoters should ponder how many just couldn't be arsed paying 40 quid for that after the Whitesnake / Def Lep debacle.
  21. avatar nonlogic liam
I had a great time at the "Whitesnake / Def Lep debacle". You probably didn't becuase you had to stand in a stop start cue for 50 minutes in order to feed your crippling drink problem. I'm so glad I didn't go last night. I went to see [i:f40f7a6a20]Ivan the Terrible II[/i:f40f7a6a20] in the QFT and then part took of some [i:f40f7a6a20]Amadeus[/i:f40f7a6a20]. I rock!

Absolutely agree. I just dont understand what the problem is with the drinks in there. As regards to attendance, it was probably only half full, but for 40 i think its still very good considering all of the bands own shows would have charged at least 20

    Spot on.
  24. avatar T Entertainment
The official excuse for not allowing punters out to smoke is that they don't have enough staff to monitor smokers outside.
Translation: we don't give a fuck, and we've chosen to spend the bare minimum on customer service. The yellow shirted goons were behaving with open hostility last night to the audience paying their wages, and I heard someone on a walkie-talkie saying a 'squad' was needed down to deal with the smokers.

    No thanks.
  25. avatar VimFuego
My eyes were well and truly opened at the leppard/whitesnake debacle recently to how bad things have truly got. I have been to gigs in many different parts of europe and never seen the kind of nonsense i have witnessed at the point and the odyssey. Is it just metal concerts that are consistently staffed by monkeys of the highest calibre who no doubt look forward to a good old tustle with a kid half their size?

Before i even got in last night, i was interrogated by a 19ish year old in a red coat who, after frisking me asked me twice how much i had drank that evening. Besides the fact i had come straight from work, the suggestion that i should infact give him a recount of what i had done earlier appalled me.

As for the bald, meat heads throwing their weight about, it seems to be a policy now that if you are spotted having fun, you must be dealt with by at least 5 aggressive fucknuts wearing headsets. Its become totally obtrusive and their attitudes provoke many situations. As for this dont walk over the white line rubbish, its just another excuse to enforced more control.

In all honesty, bald meatheads aside, this was quite easily the worst concert i have EVER seen, i went to it with an open mind, really looking forward to seeing Megadeth especially given their reputation as a metal heavyweight. The whole thing was just a giant let down, i just don't have the energy to type the exact ins and outs of why right now, i just wanted to leave a comment on here with what i thought, and i must stress that this is just my opinion, i know how these comments can quickly decend into arguments here!
Oh and those meat heads really need sorted out, i saw some in the O2 in dublin recently hitting people and shoving people around very physically, its just not on, i hope someone sues eventsec and the like some of these days!
  27. avatar Andrew
I heard the official attendance figures as 5,100 total with 2,200 standing - so just over half-full. Not bad when you consider the tour also played Dublin.

For anyone concerned by the Odyssey's customer service - which seems to be a lot of people - why not contact them?

I don't drink or smoke, I enter by the press door and I generally stay in my seat, so I always have a good time at the Odyssey. But I can appreciate others' concern about queues, smoking areas, heavy-handed security etc. It's sad that people don't have a better time at Belfast's best venue.
  28. avatar T Entertainment
I have, and I know they have been approached many times on these issues and others by punters and the media. Judging by the situation getting worse instead of better, they do not give a fuck.
There's a whole culture there which needs changed and they're not interested. It's a simple and altogether typical case of good old Northern Irish greed and short-sightedness.
  29. avatar Jamie_IronMaiden
the only complaints i have for the night which directly affected my enjoyment of the gig would be testament's awful mix and the whole farce of the pricks constantly manhandling people in the pit.
I was stood directly beside it throughout the whole gig, and it was all in the best of nature, everytime some poor sod fell on their hole there was about 5 other headers immediately yanked em back to their feet (i should know, i was this poor sod at least 5 times) and the only digs swung/violent behaviour was by the wankers in the shirts and headsets.
As for the staff outside of the hall, i noticed that as soon as the doors opened a sense of hostility was in the air, purely from the treatment of the crowd by the staff, i mean there were times i felt as if i was being charged for a felony rather than making my way into a gig.

One thing in particular which really gets me is not being able to hang on to your original ticket stub! Maybe that's common practice everywhere now, but it still winds me up!

Yeah I agree, why cant they just rip it off. I remember last time I was there I asked could I not have my ticket back, they said they'd give it out after the gig. Eh? Course I never did see the ticket again

The ONLY gig venue i've been to in the world that take your ticket stub is the Odyssey Arena! everywhere else scans it and don't even rip the little bit off, that really annoys me too, i know its only a ticket stub but if the Odyssey won't even let people bring a camera in, you'd think the least they could do it let you have your ticket stub

That about sums it up. The worst sort of Northern Irish spide-instincts came to the fore, again. I am not paying to subsidize that sort of shite again. It's SECC for me.

As for the ticket stubs, mine was snatched by a slack jawed spide who informed me with glee 'ye can't keep that!' before tossing it in the bin with all the rest. I didn't want to, but clearly depriving those who did was the best part of his job.
  34. avatar the_vanishin
I seriously hope no foreigners travelled to see that show, the staff gave the worst possible service and are an embarrassment to Belfast.

Apart from Megadeth, the highlight of my night was one of the baldy yellow-shirted thugs getting soaked by a well aimed pint in the moshpit.

Aggressive security seems to be a recurring theme at gigs in Belfast recently, with surly staff exercising what little power they are ever going to have in their lives. A friend of mine is a former Eventsec bouncer, he knew of quite a few of their staff members who were in the job because they thought they could get involved in a fight every now and again, and get paid for it.

On a positive note, Megadeth and Priest were excellent. :D
  35. avatar NumberBlack
With the whole ticket thing you guys are talking about...I was allowed to keep mine lol, no-one took it off me or any of the people i was with.

As for bouncers...i have contempt for almost all of the bouncers i come across in Belfast, they all seem to be out to piss me off.
  36. avatar Jonny892
they are worse in the limelight than they are at the odyssey, i thought odyssey bouncers were dead on in comparison! Limelight bouncers at Soulfly were literally spides with headsets and matchin shirts.

other than that, Megadeth were awesome highlight of the nite for me :)

EDIT: Could anyone possibly post a Megadeth setlist? I would like it for a playlist
