I didn't originally buy tickets for these and as time went on, I was kind of assuming that they'd have sold out. But I bought tickets for the Monday and Friday shows yesterday, so if you were thinking of going there may still be time!

I'm not going to the other one. I think The Enemy are dire (which is not the same as just not liking their music).
  8. avatar ShowYourBones
I've got a Monday ticket but alas no friends are attending said day, prob just go on my own anyhow, so if you spot a man in need of a hug, feel free to approach.

Was gonna get a Friday ticket too as a bunch of ones I know are talking about heading but think I might try and head to EP instead.

Mystery jets have cancelled gigs next week due to illness, will they still be playing this? Acording to nme they should be back after the 9th August..

[quote:2ce94bbe7c]Mystery Jets have cancelled a number of upcoming festival appearence because frontman Blaine Harrison is ill.

According to a statement issued to NME.COM, the singer is receiving hospital treatment for ailments on his feet, a recurring injury relating to his Spina Bifida.

Harrison though, is currently on the mend, and hopes to be back on the road soon.

Mystery Jets have cancelled the following festival appearances:

France Plague de Rock (July 31)
    Standon Calling Festival (August 1)
    Derbyshire Y-Not Festival (2)
    Kendall Calling Festival (3)
    Germany Haldern (7)

Mystery Jets are out, lead singer's still in hospital resting up. Not expected back until Reading.
  22. avatar The Stiff Kitten
Wrong. Mystery Jets are still go for their Irish dates. From their agent last night, reconfirmed today when arranging some last minute details with management:

"The cancelations that the mystery jets have made in the UK do not affect the Ireland shows.

Blain has been, and still is in hospital. He should be out later this week and should be fine for the Belfast and Dublin shows. Obviously if anything changes and this is not the case I will let you know but we are absolutely planning to do Ireland at the moment."

If you're going to the gig and fancy dancing on stage dressed as an Alien Santa, or a Bunny Rabbit or whatever it happens to be this time then you should enter our competition on http://www.belsonic.com Winners will be emailed at 2.30pm on Monday. This is unmissable for fans of Flaming Lips. Even if you don't win this one, we'll be choosing a few fans on the night. There's a few pics of our stage going up on the gallery page ofn the Belsonic website...

Maybe a daft question, but this gig is outdoors, yes? Not in a big buggering tent?

Wouldn't need to be a special pit area or i'll be hugely annoyed, but i'm pretty sure that won't be especially, as said in last post, the venue is too small for that kind of thing.

I enjoyed Mogwai's performance, seemed to play alot of new stuff, Friend of the Night was top drawer. Stuart was meandering through the crowd during Oppenheimer, who I thought were also quite good. First time hearing the new material and it sounded swell.
  47. avatar Amz
Excellent night. Was really impressed by how well it was organised. A small site but well laid out. The change over time between bands seemed pretty swift as well!

I missed Jape who I wanted to catch, but guess another time.

Oppenheimer - I went down thinking if I catch them, a bonus, but not a massive deal if I dont as I've seen them many times now. Glad I did. I Really enjoyed their set, and the perfect start to the night.

Mogwai - I mainly kept thinking if this was 5 years ago I would have been in a trance. But i wasn't. Sounded good but I felt completely disconnected from it. Probably more so to do with last night being a bit like Glasgowbury only on smaller site. walk 10 meters and stop to have a chat with x and repeat 50 times.

Flaming Lips - Brilliant. I'm glad they pulled out all the stops for this. Big grin on me face the whole time. :-D
  48. avatar ShowYourBones
Caught the last song of Jape's set. Had heard nothing prior to it and was suitably impressed, must track down some of their/his stuff.

Amz, I can understand your thinking behind Mogwai's performance, quite a few people I spotted seemed to lack any interest in their set. I was just glad to see them again.
  49. avatar Recycled Alien
I also liked Mogwai -- much more than the last time I saw them, which I think was the infamous Queens gig when they took the hump and said they'd never be back. They even seemed quite relaxed and happy to be there last night.

On a first hearing, Jape seem like an act to watch out for, although I noticed that the "drummer" didn't contribute very much compared to the drum backing track. In fact, during some songs I suspected that his microphones were turned off entirely.

A good one from Oppenheimer too. I've never seen Rocky so animated and high-spirited. Maybe it's because he just got engaged. (By the way, when Shaun was setting up his kit, he played the hi-hat intro to 'Shaft' :D )

My only complaint of the night was that I went home, very very hungry, since the food stalls' choice for vegetarians was, err, nothing.

I noticed that in the Black Box a few weeks ago at that Topman gig. There was no way he was playing on the last song.

Oh and a top night last night. I'll hold my hands up and say I was one of the people uninterested in Mogwai, but Oppenheimer were great once again, and I can't even describe how great it was to eventually see the Flaming Lips. Wayne Coyne I salute you!
  51. avatar Niall Harden
disconnected is about the right word. a few years ago they were my favourite band in the world, but they've just gone wrong and wronger. there was no subtlety, no dynamics, no melody, nothing to them last night. even like herod was a total dirge. they look like they're on auto-pilot these days, like they're even boring themselves. plus, i'd never noticed how bad martin is on the drums. real bad!

still, everything else ruled. that was the best i've seen flaming lips play.

side note: backwater (shaun's old band) released a split single with mogwai once. so it was nice to see sb watching oppenheimer so it was. nice.
  52. avatar ShowYourBones
Taken from the Mogwai review on the ATL website:

STAND OUT MOMENT: The look on Stuart Braithwaite's face as a few, overly enthusiastic, shall we say, punters tried to start up a clap-along. Lads, we appreciated the energetic response and everything but there's two things to remember when attempting this - a) know the song and b) have some sense of rhythm.

I forgot about this moment, it indeed was priceless.
  53. avatar tenrabbits
I think the lads who were attempting the clap along knew fine well they were out of rhythm..
  54. avatar flmcasey
This was unbelievable! I thought Jape was great (nothing beats having a song about 'Tin Lizzy'). Oppenheimer were pretty impressive too, even if some knob from Dublin hept heckling them.

I wasn't really expected much of Mogwai, but they had me in a trance the whole time, even if there were some 14 year old emos going "When's he gonna start singing?!"

Then , to be honest, there's nothing more I can say about The Flaming Lips. Un-fucking-believable! 'She Don't Use Jelly' was a personal highlight! :-D
  55. avatar DuncanDisorderly
what a great night. i came on here expecting to read the usual negativity. it felt like being in a different city; laid back vibe, no trouble, the rain even held at bay the whole evening! seemed like a gig / festival by people who love music and arent just out for a quick buck. hope it happens again next year.
  56. avatar charlysays2
    That was spectacular!
I have never had the chnce to see FLs before and it was worth the wait!
    Buzzing of this today.

On Mogwai, not their biggest fan or anything but I do enjoy their music, however I just couldn't connect last night, I think I much pefer listening to them through my headphones in the peace and quiet. Last night was just filler music for me - I was also one of the non listening crowd, was quite far back so didnt feel what might have been more of a buzz up front.

Oppenheimer as always made me smile.

Yep I loved the Lips and thought Mogwai were woefully under appreciated to be honest.
Saw the Lips at Glastonbury and The Electric Picnic and was wondering how they'd translate that huge festival experience into a smaller venue but by god did they ever achieve it.
Just to be slightly confused as opposed to negative - I thought the crowd took a long time to actually get into the Lips set - howe often did Wayne ask for noise and stress that they were recording and it wass their first time here??
But aside from that observation Do you Realise? was an absolutely fantastic finisher!!

Oppenheimer: need to shut up during songs. Nothing ruins the flow than someone talking complete bollocks every 2 minutes. Rocky was incredibly animated, maybe just cos he had a big stage to run around? Think I like it as a 4piece more than a 2, although I still enjoy it as a 2.

Mogwai: The lack of dynamics I attributed to it being outdoors in a huge space, so you can't really do quiet, especially not if you're at the front. Defintely a band for indoors. Not the best I've seen them, but not the worst...Their ZX Spectrum tshirt is nice though.

Absolutely fantastic! Never seen the FL's before, knew what to expect and they didn't disappoint but what made the experience even better as already said previously was the fact that there were little/no spides there just for the sake of being there! Crowd relaxed and enjoying themselves,brilliant-tho some people reckon it may have taken a while to get going could this be due to the 'filler' music provided by Mogwai before hand?! Also either I'm going a tad mutton jeff thanks to all the gigs I'm frequenting but I found the sound quality a bit lacking, was around 30yards from the stage but found it very hard to make out what was being said....

i'm all fully recovered and back in the land of the internet...

i found myself along with most other people "disconnected" from mogwai's set. maybe that's got something to do with everyone insiting on having those i-know-you-off-myspace-or-fastfude conversations up around the bar or maybe just because i'm simply not a huge fan of their music.

i thought oppenheimer played really well. was that their biggest gig? it would have been nice to have a little more darkness for the pyrotechnics but the inter song banter was endearing in parts (although almost word-for-word the same inter song banter as at glasgowbury). the never never sounded great with angie and hornsby although it takes something special to beat local pop classics like breakfast in nyc and saturday looks bad to me... singalongs and hand-claps are hugely underrated!!

the flaming lips need very little more said about them. it's all been covered by other people. what a brilliant show. if only all bands could take a leaf out of this book. in times when record sales are dwindling and promoters are finding it hard to sell out live shows we really need more bands like this who not only produce fantastic music but also put on a hugely unforgettable live experience.

and on top of all that i'm very glad i got down early to see jape. i didn't know much of his stuff but it sounded very likeable. i'd be interested in checking him out in a smaller venue sometime... i did find myself being easily distracted from the stage by lisa hannigan's in-crowd dance moves though!!

and the less said about the dance moves in the black box later, the better!

For anyone interested, Mystery Jets have cancelled their appearance at Belsonic on Friday, hopefully Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip's set will be extended, ;-)

    Taken from Hotpress dot com:

London indie merchants Mystery Jets have cancelled dates in Belfast and Dublin due to illness.

According to a spokesperson, bandmember Blaine Harrison "continues to recover from ailments on his feet, a reoccurring injury relating to his Spina Bifida." The dates affected are August 15 in Custom House Square, Belfast and August 16 in Crawdaddy, Dublin.

Full refunds are available from the place of purchase, and "a full personal statement from Blaine in his hospital bed" has been posted on myspace.com/mysteryjets.

We (kowalski) have been added to the Friday bill so I do believe each band will just be moved up a slot and therefore Dan Le Sac wiill have a longer set!

Good stuff, any idea what time you guys will be on? Gonna try my best to get down for the Skibunny DJs, start it off with a bang.
  79. avatar Lucy Lu
Shame about the Mystery Jets but hurrah for Kowalski. Goodtimes.

Can I just say the burgers, chips, tea, cookies and sarnies were exceptional on Monday and I'm really excited about eating them all again on Friday.

Yeh tis a shame, they have fairly stepped up their game and it would have been pretty sweet to see them! We'll do are best to make sure they aren't missed too much.

Showyourbones.... I believe we are on from 7 to 7.25pm!

    7.45pm - Delorentos
8.30pm - Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Also: I'm just listening to the replay of the ATL radio show, and the Go! Team track near the start is stupendous. (I'm onto the live sets from Monday now.)

also - have you tried passing on your 'beef' (ha) about the lack of vegetarian options to the promoters? they are an extremely accommodating collection of people who would definitely appreciate the feedback.
  85. avatar The Stiff Kitten
We will have veggie options sorted for the next two shows.Despite having arranged this in advance with the caterers they both neglected to accommodate vegetarians on the night, much to our annoyance.

i had an absolute ball on monday night. no recycling though...? i saw one yellow bin but it seemed to be for mixed waste and when i asked the bar staff they didn't know what was being done with used cups.

I concur, especially the local acts and Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip. I'm sure the Zutons will put in a sterling performance aswell, one of the better 'indie/pop' acts out there.

Edit: Just noticed the strange substitution.

thanks to all who organised Belsonic, Monday was incredible! Saw most of Oppenheimer who I've begun to like more and more. Mogwai sort of washed over me I'm afraid but Sir Wayne Coyne was on top form - I saw FL at Witnness when they filled in for The White Stripes (ahh their version of Seven Nation Army was sublime!) Anyways, Monday night brought it all back for me - truly inspiring band! Hope they include little Belfast on all future tours! :)

I was really tempted to go to this for Future of the Left alone. I've seen FWW a good few times in the last few months and think I'm all FWW'd out. Still very good live.

Not bothered by the Enemy or Reverend and the Makers at all, so I decided to skip it.

Still, if going by Monday is anything, it'll will be a great night. I'm intrigued to find out the different attendence for each day... All three days are quite diverse in a way.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the correct timetable for tonight?

    5.45pm - Gates open
    6.00pm - Skibunny DJs
    7.00pm - Delorentos
7.45pm - Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

that's not right, Kowalski are on just after skibunny dj's. Everyone else moves up a slot

As posted by Rigsy on the previous page:

    5.45pm - Gates open
    6.00pm - Skibunny DJs
    7.00pm - Kowalski
    7.45pm - Delorentos

Also the official after party in the skitten runs to 3 a.m.
  104. avatar ShowYourBones
Thanks for that. Not sure what time i'll make it down at tonight and wanted to be certain that I wouldnt miss Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip.

Rigsy and Co would need to update the ATL website then, terribly misleading.

I assume the aftershow party will not be serving alcohol until 3 bells? Kitten normally stops at 1 or so. That be the law I guess.

I thought Fighting With Wire were amazing! Even if the crowd weren't really up for it because they were mostly indy victims and spides.

I didn't get into the Reverend and The Makers set, no matter how much I tried, and when I did get into the Enemy's set, yer man ruined by going all political.

He has a point though, unless the band is political in their music it's abit annoying when you are trying to enjoy a gig and the jumped up lead singer starts talking shite.
If they really cared they would write a song about it :)
  109. avatar whosbainejakey
Future of The Left were fantastic, really enjoyed them despite the general vibe of wet misery. They were just as good as you'd hope a band formed from the ashes of McLusky and Jarcrew would be.

Shame they weren't being filmed, Kelson's antics during the last song were both disgusting and hilarious!

I dont think he did anything in particular, but he was getting on like a bit of an ass hole frontman really. Although, in saying that, he got the crowd out of the beer tent and to the front and into a better spirit.

Absolutely loved the attitude of FWW and not being quiet about their dislike of indie music :D

One of General Fiasco who also put on a great show

Yeah, Cahir is a total legend. Hilarious stuff. Falco and Kelson from FOTL were great craic as well, taking the piss out of the workman on the building site and the general amount of apathy amongst the crowd. They were excellent though, better than when I last saw them in Dublin.
  119. avatar Recycled Alien
My favourite set of last night was Dan le Sac & Scroobius Pip (anyone who raps about the periodic table can't be bad), followed by the Go! Team and then the Zutons.
    [img:19a873b9ad]http://a813.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/76/l_2e2255d18a2245004f283c305d7b42b4.jpg[/img:19a873b9ad]

Not really knowing the Go! Team's material, I was a bit surprised when they went into their "Sonic Youth" segment, but I really liked it.

It rained a bit for the Zutons, but not heavy.
    [img:19a873b9ad]http://a109.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/20/l_2b53f90c8a4e517f2d121bf2a5ccbe2c.jpg[/img:19a873b9ad]

I guess the order of DlS & SP being on before Delorentos was because of some need to stick to their original schedule (they play Pukkelpop today). Delorentos were a bit so-so at the start, but caught fire about two-thirds of the way through, although they couldn't quite keep up the momentum until the very end.

Kowalski's music is fine, but their audience communication was dismal. (Maybe they were scared. Shit, I would have been.) No need for "Let me hear you say YEAH!" nonsense, but a bit more animation would be good.

I got down in time for most of the Skibunny set, which was great, although lost a bit in the broad daylight, with most people (a good number too) sitting round the sides of the square listening.
  120. avatar 10rapid
Dan le Sac and Scroob were great....really enjoyable.
Big surprise of the night was The Go Team. I thought they were a cheesy lightweight kinda dance act but they came on all jags blazing like Sonic Youth and had that kind of Japanese pop-dance-rap-noise vibe going on....they were brilliant!

The Zutons were a bit pedestrian I thought. And it didn't help that they heralded a shower of beer from tools in the audience.
  121. avatar flmcasey
The Go! Team were unreal! My mates and me were the half naked people in the front row with 'Go! Team' scrawled across our bodies.

Ninja: 'Oh my God! Are those people naked in the front row? Please, can that girl just stand there so I can't see'

I really enjoyed Lesac vs Pip too, and even though I'm not a massive Zutons fans, I enjoyed most of their set.
But, oh my fuck, the Go! Team were amazing...

A sound problem is by far one of the most frustrating things when playing a gig. Every gig we've played (execpt one in Laverys) had some sort of sound problem and its the most frustrating thing because you could be playing the set of your life, but it sounds shit to you and everyone else whos listening. I feel for them, but I'm sure there set was awesome none the less!

it wasn't anything above standard tweaking things during the first song though, totally standard for any band at a festival who doesn't get a soundcheck.

That is something we have to work on, it comes with practice I suppose however we aren't really aiming to be the Kasier Chiefs or that sort of band but appreciate the honest appraisal!

Thought the Go!Team were sweet as fuck, really impressed with how their sound was, very full, quite sonic-ly weird yet had a great groove to it.
