what would you mugs think of having a news page on the site?

It would be used to report things like music websites of note, particularly scene bands' sites with new / interesting content etc., developements and points of interest from stuff like NIMIC or the various festivals.

The news would primarily come from people mailing us with info, which we'd check out and post. It'd be entirely passive (at least to begin with), but would provide a more stable platform for news reporting than jsut posting in the forum, where the article could fall away unread quite quickly.

I guess those of you who play computer games are familiar with the Gamespy network and the format they use, which'd be pretty close to what I'm thinking of. For those who aren't, each site in the network deals with its own "scene" (in this case a game) and reports on any related happenings, check these pages for examples: http://ac.xrgaming.net http://www.planettribes.com http://www.planetquake.com http://www.planethalflife.com Edited by: fastfude at: 9/22/01 12:10:30 pm

Do you mean like a link to external articles or small articles on the page itself....or both.
For instance, [plug]we're appearing on the next BURBS CD, relesed on 1st October[/plug], is that the kind of news that would go on it?
;)

yeah, that kinda thing, in a small paragraph, like it's done on the sites linked above. There wouldn't be big articles or editorial, just short clips like that, with links to further info on the relevant sites...

Oh, all right then.

Didn't you do this before and everybody voted to be rid of it?

um, don't think so?

Waaaay back in the mists of time (before the noticeboard even!) there was a news page, but it got dumped in favour of just posting news straight to the board when it came in.

Now that traffic is high enough, it'd be good to reverse that process and separate the discussion from the announcements for clearer reading.

ooooh, wait I remember now, you're talking about the newsfeed thingy that ezBoard provides, which was a bit pants as it slowed down the boards (and only ever talked about Napster anyhoo). Yeah, that's gone for good (unless they do something pretty radical to it)...

and by radical, it seems they meant "stop providing it"
:p

just wondering if there would be a way of making the gigs that are happening on the news page a wee bit less vague? You know...for the lazy people.
:)

nope
:)

It's deliberately vague so that you have to go and read the gigs page properly to get the full info, otherwise wouldnt be much point in having one!

But can I dare to suggest that whoever's job it is to update the News page does it a bit more quickly!?
Like with a 24-hour turnarahnd at least?
Cos otherwise it ain't so much "news" as "olds" innit? :-O

aye, tis me. I'll try, but can't always guarantee I'll be in front of me computer every day with enough free time to do it. Ideally, people should submit the news at least a week in advance to get over this until I've devised a more cunning way of doing it...
