I noticed recently you were raisng money for the CSC gold status on ezboard.
Have you ever thought of simply using a UUB bulletin board system?
Its free, runs out of your cgi-bin, can be configured easily with color schemes, username/password access, logos etc.
I also know ntlworld dont have cgi-bins, so you would probably have to use different webspace.
Does this mean it would work out the same? i.e. save on board expenses, but pay on server space!!
Would it help if someone hosted fastfude for free on decent server space??
I hear NIMIC were going to host the entire thing out of Bill Guinney's pancreas.
Yes...and it's sugar free too.
I've worked with UBB before, and I think on balance, ezBoard offers a better system:
1) the whole ezBoard user network is connected, and there are a large number of them in use around the music scene, which makes for good community building.
2) UBB isn't actually free. There's a cut down version which is, but to get proper control of the board, you need the "full" version. Prices are here. In addition to buying a server or hosting package and paying for the UBB product, I'd also be subject to bandwidth charges from the ISP, which is what the CSC thing pays for on ezBoard anyway. Given the current cost of CSC for FF, UBB would be a good bit more expensive right now.
3) ezBoards are remotely administered, which means I don't need a server, don't have to maintain it, don't have to fix it when it breaks down, etc. So far, the service has been good, and they have a very good open forum policy for developing the product and listening to their customers, which I like.
At the end of the day, ezBoard is a very hassle-free solution for me. UBB is a good program, but at this stage, doesn't hold enough appeal by comparison to make the switch.
