FASTFUDE IS 10 | JAN 05TH | EMPIRE MUSIC HALL, BELFAST

    FASTFUDE is 10

    EMPIRE MUSIC HALL
    Botanic Avenue

    SATURDAY 05TH JANUARY 2008

    ( déjà-vu anyone? )

We couldn't get Sir Tim Berners-Lee to DJ, so instead there will be live sets and dancefloor mayhem from:

    CODA - new addition!
    STAND-UP GUY
    ESCAPE ACT
    THE DANGERFIELDS
    TIN POT OPERATION
    BOP YESTRUM

with between-band DJ cameos from assorted wretches in order of their scene points

    Doors 8.30

    Adm £5

    *****

Ten years! Where did that go? Still, Fastfude wouldn't be here if you lot weren't constantly fuelling the site with debate, discussion, banter and argument.

This gig is really just a party to mark the milestone, and to say thanks to you all for reading & contributing over the years. Hopefully it'll continue to be useful, informative, provocative and good craic for many years to come!

I was young and foolish then, I feel old and foolish now

Fastfude is the home of Northern Ireland's music scene online.

Since 1998 it's been a meeting place for bands and fans, as well as a pool of knowledge and shared experience for musicians.

Full of informed debates, hard working resource and even soapbox ranting, Fastfude has constantly supported and enhanced the outstanding music of Northern Ireland.

Ever contentious, and always full of wry NI humour, the site is built by its readership – which now stretches across the world as Northern Ireland's music gets better and better. Tens of thousands of people contributing hundreds of thousands of topics and comments every year.

This year Fastfude is ten years old: an amazing achievement for any website, and a milestone for music here.

To mark the occasion and say thanks to everyone who has been a part of the site and its community, we're having a party on Saturday January 5th in Belfast's Empire Music Hall. We want you to be there.

The show kicks off at 8.30pm sharp with live bands and DJs, and we'll party till we can't party any more.

Fastfude is 10 – join us to kick in the new year, and here's to another 10 for Northern Ireland's loudest website!

UPDATE: Coda have been added to the lineup in place of The Elliots who've had to bow out.

Oooh, and can we have cardboard cutouts to represent gone but not forgotten posters such as RadioheadGuy1 and In Prog We Trust?

The Enfant Terrible: Leave me alone! I'm nice! I came here to make new friends and maybe kiss a girl (or two)!

Massive scrap ensues where I get pummelled to death. Posters on fastfude hear members of my family and regulars of bookfinders cafe say nice things about me at my funeral and feel so guilty one of them creis.

I may be an old-timer, but I've only been on fastfude since 2005. But I was just thinking about how many people from here that I've met in real life.

Just off the top of my head, there's fastfude (of course), dirty stevie smitty, rentaghost, cruz, Chi-Lite, drive by fader, chrisjedijane, AngelaMOK, elms, rigsyATL, TalkShowMan, lemonade, Estrella Ojos, trixie sidebottom, kasey, georgia, Captain Kennedy, Mikeymoto, gregz, huggy baps, mcflymo, smittennn, xfirefishx, The Fires of Hell, gl2400, Halfcaste, jenniemcc, Tates Modern, lauramstevenson, FiddlerOnTheRoof, Alice, charlysays2, Pete, MSB Mastering, comprachio, Amz, tinpot anto, Ratoot, Daithi jasper, icedcoffee, goatboy, greensleevesisgod, scott_evil, hardstaff0p, Kid Al, thesacredhearts (those last four due to buying or selling stuff).

That's about forty, but I'm sure there are many more that haven't come to mind immediately. And I'm not counting the many people I know by sight, having seen them play.

Come to think of it, if it wasn't for fastfude, I'd have no friends. I'll bet that was Roger's idea for himself when he started it. We nerds need help to get a social life.

Indeed. Way back towards the beginning of '99, I was in Backbeat (probably picking up the latest Kaleidoscope demo) and picked up an application form for the Fastfude Gourmet season demo competition.

Myself and my friend Graeme decided to try and write and record a song for a bit of fun to send in. We recorded a song called "The Cardboard Cow" under the guise of "Chickenpox", which featured Graeme playing guitar (he couldn't really play guitar) and I was playing bass (I wasn't too hot at that either), singing and hitting a tambourine with my feet completely out of time and all recorded live on a sh*tty tape recorder).

We sent it in and we ended up in a heat with 5 other bands, I think. We pretty much cheated as much as we could and got a sh*t loads of votes, more than any other band in the whole competition, including Roo and Cecil's Flea Circus.

As we won our heat, we had to play 3 tracks in the Limelight. We weren't really too sure what we were going to do, but we managed to rustle up a bit of a band with Graeme on bass, his friend Guy on guitar and vocals, me on keyboard and Brian from Watercress helped us out by drumming. We didn't play The Cardboard Cow as we opted to play 3 of guys songs instead. We got 1% of all of the votes (4) on the night and word on the street is Radio 1 DJ and TV presenter Colin Murray voted for us!?!?!?!?! We would have had more votes, but unfortunately every single member of entourage got kicked out for being underage (we were only 14/15, as was our entourage).

After the gig, we got a drummer and changed our name to Chickenpox Pet Rescue, later changing it to Petrie. We had some seriously decent tunes. We probably should have played the "age" game a bit more, but we decided to pretend we were over 18 so we could get pissed and play in pubs instead.

    Noise Annoys
    BY DAVID ROY d.roy@irishnews.com

Hello and welcome back to Noise Annoys, the local music column that stubbornly refuses to start the new year by making a few carefully selected lifestyle changes.

Instead, my first order of business for 2008 is to tell you all about the marvellous party a friend of mine is throwing tomorrow evening at that most auspicious of local venues, The Belfast Empire Music Hall.

It’s kind of a double celebration actually. Not only will Roger Herbert be heartily congratulating himself on managing to stay alive for a whopping three decades, he’ll also be whooping it up over a whole ten years of success for his living legacy, www.fastfude.org

The online home of the Belfast music scene, Fastfude was set up by Roger as a college project way back in the dim and distant days of 1998.

For the past tenth of a century the perplexingly named website has been a virtual meeting place and vital resource for Northern Ireland based bands and music fans.

With discussion forums expressly geared towards all areas of local music, plus live gig listings and a classified/wanted section, Fastfude is an invaluable free and totally independent resource crammed with useful user generated content.

The site boasts thousands of people contributing hundreds of thousands of topics and comments on everything from the latest gigs and the best place to record a demo to why their mate’s band were “totally robbed” at that last battle of the bands, so they were.

There’s even a little bit of tangential topical debate to keep things spicy and relevant, not to mention an entire lexicon of site-specific colloquialisms and humorous “routines” that newcomers complain about right up until the moment they start using them too. Trust me though, if you’re the kind of crazed loner who reads this column on a regular basis, you’ll fit right in over on Fastfude.

Anyway, to celebrate his creation’s tenth birthday, Mr Herbert has organised a rip roaring knees-up called Fastfude Is 10, a thank-you to everyone who’s been a part of the site and its community in the past, present and hopefully future. He wants everyone to come along and enjoy themselves just as soon as they’ve paid the requisite £5 entry fee, preferably in exact cash.

For this paltry sum, you’ll gain access to a smorgasbord of local music delights including live performances from Coda, Escape Act, The Dangerfields, Stand-Up Guy and The Tin Pot Operation linked together by tons of pre-recorded local tunage courtesy of DJs from the Fastfude user base (including yours truly) who’ll be frantically cramming as many homegrown songs into their 20 minute slots as possible.

All the bands featured have long used Fastfude as a tool to help them gain a foothold on that slippery, slimy beast we call the local music scene, while the night will end with a full-on lalt fuelled rave-up courtesy of dedicated Fastfuders turned eclectic local club and comedy revue, Bop Yestrum: expect masks, free-form percussion and high speed collisions between Jesus Lizard, KLF and Can.

Doors open at 8:00pm and the fun will last as long as the patience of the Empire bouncers holds out. Here’s to a happy birthday for Roger and another ten long years of Fastfude based shenanigans for us all.

SUG weren't really my cup of tea. Musically, I quite enjoyed it but all that screaming was a bit too much for me.

Escape Act were fantastic. My first time seeing them and I was very impressed.

That was my first time seeing the Dangerfields with Jasper and they were great, as usual.

Oh, important to thank Shep as well, who kindly took this on board and made sure everything ran swimmingly.
    Cheers, big lawd.

I didn't get home until 11am yesterday morning. That can only mean one of two things: either I fell out with everyone I have ever met, or I had one hell of a night! I prefer the former.

It goes without saying that I will never allow myself to be dragged onstage again. I now know the true meaning of the word "scundered".

Sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has kept this avalanche rumbling for a decade. I may be the one turning the crank-handle, but you lot are the ones that make the site what it is. There would be no point in maintaining it if people didn't use it, and that wouldn't happen if it wasn't useful and productive as well as being good craic, so first and foremost thanks to you all.

Special thanks then to Coda, Lap Dog Shuffle, Stand-up Guy, Iso9, Escape Act, Dirty Stevie Smitty, Whosbainejakey, The Dangerfields and Bop Yestrum for a sterling evening's entertainment. Additional special thanks to The Empire staff, Dee & Deezer, Shep, Chris, Ciaran, Eamonn, Dave, Phil for the organisation and smooth running of the show. Yet more thanks to Rigsy & Paul, Rory, Dave, Phil, Eddie, Edwin and anyone else who plugged the gig or marked the event in the meeja. I have almost certainly missed a few there, but only because my brain has yet to resume normal functions since the weekend, apologies if you should be in that list somewhere, but aren't.

It was as well you went relatively peacefully after a bit of cajoling, Herbert - four burly men (well, me, Flumox, Smitty and PDN Ed) were primed to carry you on stage if there had been prolonged resistance. For the de-bagging of your life.

It was indeed good craic this.. I stayed down the back in case I wandered into some kind of fastfude hardmen/wookie/lalt themed stuff down the front right.. a dangerous place for any man without the correct jabs.

Almost forgot about this - have you ever seen a jaw as square as Crossey's?!
It's the manliest jaw in the scene. If the last ten years are to mean anything, surely that's it?
