Does anyone have any tips on how to paint a guitar body a different colour without making a complete balls-up of it?
Car aerosol spray paints.
Hang the body up in a garage or shed. You can hammer a couple of nails into bits that won't be seen. It's what Fender used to do.
Use many very thin coats, waiting 20 minutes each time. Don't spray too close (drips) or too far away ("orange peel").
Finish with compatible clear laquer. Also with many thin coats.
Now sandpaper it all off and try again using the experience you have learned. Repeat.
Add to that lightly sand your guitar before you start apply paint to give a key.
If you plan on stripping it back to wood first prime it before you apply paint.
Also if you have any nasty knocks you can use Bondo (car repair mud) to fix before priming.
A tip for hanging is to you the existing fixing points. A screw threaded hook can be used at the strap positions.
To do a really good job DON'T MASK OFF - REMOVE all hardware, a tip if you can't rewire, for pots is to take off the nuts and push them into the guitar mask to hole from inside. For pickus use some coat hanger to lift them away at 90degrees from the body (MASK THEM UP WELL).
AND REMEMBER PREPARATION, PREPARATION, PREPARATION.
OR FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO..... BE VERY PISSED OFF WITH THE RESULTS.
