I was reading an interesting thread about guitar shops from 2006 i think. any way i just thought i would share this with you.

I was looking to buy a fender tele caster (american series) for christmas, so i did the usual online hunt and the headed for town.

Firstly I went to marcus were there it was sitting in all its gorly at £700, not to bad i though.

I carried on to Matchetts were unfortunalley they didnt have it in stock but were willing to order it in, awfully nice people. It was slightly cheaper than £700 but not worth the wait.

    I then perceeded to the guitar emporium, were the guitar guy says;

"No we dont have any but, you dont want one of them anyway. what you want is one of these japenese(copy)ones, sounds better than the fender"

I left in disgust, thinking to my self how could a copy sound better than the fender. You buy the fender cause you like the sound. felt rather annoyed, so i headed back to Marcus were i bought it. take that guitar emporium.
  2. avatar ebs93
A shop tries to sell you its own stock.....shocker!
  3. avatar thefatson
They probably said the copy was better because there is an era of copies that have the same workmanship as the fenders of the 70s and such.
More mass production goes into the newer ones, I personally haven't played enough of them to be an authority on this though.
  4. avatar nartysham
my father makes and repairs guitars so a lot of fenders come through our house. the general rule is 'made in japan' is ok but 'crafted in japan' is a lot better. Some guitars vary of course.

the japanese used to be given a smaller budget per guitar than their american counterparts and were expected to make an inferior guitar, but of course they worked their way around the small budget and start producing better sounding guitars. thats about when fender decided that this was a job for the mexicans
  5. avatar racecarisracecarbackwards
Did you even try the guitar out that they said was better??

Hit the nail on the head. I sold a Fender Telecaster during the summer as I have a Tokai Tele that was just better sounding and the neck was much better.
  8. avatar thenovembercriminals
Sound, the impurities that make the tele the tele, its awkward neck and its not all there sound on the neck pick up. yea i did play it, it was a bit lighter, but personal i though the tele sounded better.

so you say you like Telecasters because they have bad necks, and crap neck pickups? And you didn't like the other one? Surely it would have had a crapper neck and crapper pickups?

I just don't understand what you're on about at all.
  11. avatar thenovembercriminals
ok put it this, way the tele aint best looking, sounding nor playable guitar in the world. but it has a charm and it is this charm that makes it the best guitar. it has something that makes it just a tele.

The other guitar had a better neck and all but it lacked charm.

Oh, I can see why you're annoyed. If someone was to offer me a superior instrument at a reduced price, I'd be raging to. The very idea of it...

Anyway, it may interest you to know that Tokai Strats and Teles as sold in the Emporium are now drying up in supply, as the Factor is presently sub-contracted to produce guitars with a certain "F-word" on the headstock. Care to guess which one?

The Tokai Telecaster (or Breezysound as it's known) is easily as good as it's American Fender counterpart. This is coming from someone who likes Fender guitars.

Oh, and the Tokai is cheaper, so it's just a choice of whether you want to pay a bit extra for that "F word".
  23. avatar Kingnez
the telecaster is arguably the best playing and sounding guitar ever

i have played american series ,mexicans, japs, squires and copies both high quality and cheapos

i liked the usa's the japs and the delux mexs (which i ended up going for a nashville to be precise)
the mexstandard/classic series and squire ranged from just as good to poor probably due to some QC problems

the tokai i didnt really like
the yamaha mike stern was a fine guitar but wasnt for me
the cheapo ones in ge stunk

The point is, he didn't feel it was a superior instrument.

I've heard of other people feeling the same way after going to Guitar Emporium, being told that what they wanted wasn't actually what they wanted and offered something else. They took it (however it was intended) as very condescending. They then left and bought what they actually wanted online. (this isn't an autobiographical story BTW)

I've played a Tokai strat, and I wouldn't swap my fender jap strat for it any day.
  25. avatar Tele
I've found that the Tokai Stratocasters aren't anywhere as nice as the Fenders too.
  26. avatar Danny McCormack
You could always buy a Tokai, buy a Fender decal and do the switch. I did it to a no-name Precision copy, gave it a bit of a beating and period relic'ing, and sold it to someone in Lurgan for £4000.

    Scam merchant!!

But yeah, I didn't mean to be argumentative in this thread, it's just it seemed as though the guy who started it was being quite ridiculous in a sense that he thought it was wrong for the GE employee to sell him their product and/or do him a favour.

  30. avatar chrisjedijane
not only that, but I'd spot it a mile off, as the headstock designs are different, and the hardware is slightly different.

Tokai makes really nice guitars, but I wouldn't say that they're better than US fenders - the tokais are great value for money, but they [i:6c6b25bb55]are[/i:6c6b25bb55] built to a price.

I have a Jap reissue 1996 tele with a muther fucker bitch ass single coil shaped humbucker in the neck...it is quite simply the greatest guitar I've ever owned. Teles are great to play, and I've never found the neck to be crap. Guitar Emporium guy was probably right to give you the advice he did because Jap guitars are very well constructed, and they spare nothing!
  39. avatar i_amannie_b
the guitar emporium is shocking for trying to get people to buy stuff they don't want. i was looking for a cheap elctro/acoustic and an amp and the guy was all, "well if you give us your acoustic fender we could give you one with a pick up and also sell you a £200 marshall amp."
All i can say, is that i was having none of it.
  40. avatar tinpot anto
I replaced the neck on my fender with a new one from Allparts.

There's no decal on it and I don't give a monkeys.

I have been considering writing Ballbag on it in Biro though.

So, they recommended something to you? If you're happy with your present Fender acoustic, they could've fitted a pickup and preamp etc and it would've probably sounded and played better than the equivalent priced cheap electro-acoustic. And £200 for an amp isn't exactly expensive.

Fair enough it wasn't what you asked for specifically, but it sounds more like they were trying to give you other options in the price range. They weren't saying that they wouldn't sell you a cheap electro-acoustic.

As far as I know, one of the founding principles of the Guitar Emporium is to give people the best quality equipment they can so that people don't have to settle for the cheap rubbish that's being flogged elsewhere. The reason you won't get this type of recommendation in other guitar shops is, as found from personal experience, that they couldn't care less. You should be thankful that someone gives a shit enough to give you other options for the same price or a little more, than just take the money and run.

My price range was £200 which he knew. To pay for a marshall amp would of been a waste of money. plus, i hardly use the amp i have because i just plug into the PA at most venues, so i basically just have it for emergenices and i knew that would be the case. to pay for the amp and to get a pickup in my guitar woulda cost £300 or more.

Perhaps the chap was carrying out a gender survey of those who prefer guitars with Fender on the headstock, regardless of playability.
  48. avatar rentaghost
    perhaps.
  49. avatar BookBookBook
Fair enough, maybe generally 'girls' don't have the same interest in gear as wee boys do, but I'm sure there's plenty of people who just don't give a toss what they play, as long as it sounds alright. It's not a gender question anyway.
  50. avatar unplugged
actually our guitar player graeme works in Marcus and whilst i was talking to him last week when in getting plectrums and such like gig supplies, a young girl of about 19 or so came in with her dad and wanted to buy and american series telecaster. fair play to her and all.

so there you go. so therefore i was just wondering.
