[quote:2f7b70b743]As recently as 2001, a mere 23 artists travelled from the UK to attend South by Southwest. This year that figure has mushroomed to 123, which means the Brits account for more than half of all the overseas performers in attendance. Previously, British acts considered SXSW important because of the access it afforded to the ever-desirable US market. That remains true, but such is the international pull of the event that it can even offer a better-than-average chance of being spotted by the British press, since so many of them fly out to cover the occasion.[/quote:2f7b70b743]

Any local faces performing at this years SXSW?

I think Oppenheimer are making the trip across. Really interesting lineup this year, Iggy and the Stooges are playing at it. Interpol are showcasing new material.

LaFaro are there as well this year

In Case Of Fire as well I think.

Duke Special, Foy Vance, LaFaro, In Case Of Fire, Iain Archer, Claire Sproule, Oppenheimer, Cashier No. 9, Alloy Mental, Ben Glover and Robyn G Sheils are all heading over....unless that list has changed in the past few weeks

I'm kind of surprised and disappointed that Kowalski aren't on that list. Next year for sure.

If you look at the list GrahamSmith posted it seems that some time treading the boards so to speak was a prerequisite. i know that many of those acts have been working the live circuit for years. fair play.

Kowalski will get there as they put in the time as well.

    (lafaro!)

I think SXSW would have killed us, it's a big thing and we're a bit inexperienced in comparison to everyone on the list and by no means near that standard. Top line up though but where are Clone Quartet?! Yanks are going to be blown away!

yes but if these bands were *valid*, they'd be boycotting the US market :-D
I bet they all secretly feed Nestlé baby milk to kittens whilst no-one else is watching too...

The Dangerfields' US label is actually based in Austin and the owner runs a number of the S x SW showcases, so they'd have been there were it not for the SLF tour.

don't think C. No.9, Alloy Mental or Robyn are goin - is that not a different thing at the end of the month in and around NY and DC?

I know what you mean and it makes sense to a degree, but those Kowalski boys have packed a lot of touring into a very short space of time in the past year, playing with some pretty high profile acts, so I was half expecting to see them "rewarded" for it. It would be good to see some younger talent given a chance while they are still growing as artists rather than waiting several years.

Yeah, is that not a Tourist Board / British Council deal to do with showcasing NI as a place to visit?

    EDIT: this in fact? http://www.rediscoverni.com/index1/artsculture/music-6.htm

TBH, unless you have a really good team working on your behalf at S x SW, who will get the right suits into your gig (one among 1500), then while I'm sure it's a cool experience, it's probably also a very expensive way of merely being able to say you've played there.
Kowalski would be better off doing it next year, with the backing of a decent label - and I've little doubt that'll happen.

yeah, robyn shiels / alloy mental / ICOF / cashier no9 are going for a NIMIC / British Council showcase event in New York.

Has 'wouldn't it be great if it was like this all the time' been replaced with 'I drink alone because I'm bored of Belfast'?
